  • "Power steering computer unit" -- HELP!!!

A family member has a 2012 Explorer with 38K miles (2K over warranty of course) and the "power steering computer unit" apparently went out yesterday. They drove it to the dealership and were told it was out of warranty and that it would be something like $2,400 to fix. I know nothing about "power steering computers" (didn't even know there was such a thing), but it seems ridiculous something like that would go out that soon and that it costs that much to fix. I looked online and saw that Ford recalled a bunch of 2011-2013 Explorers due to an issue with the steering gear. The symptoms I read about online sound almost identical to the one in my family member's Explorer.

Does anyone know anything about the power steering computer/module and/or the steering gear in the Explorers? Is the dealership (Prestige Ford) trying to bend them over and screw the %#$@ out of them? That's what it sounds like to me, but like I said, I don't know anything about this issue.

    Thanks.

I'm assuming its the EPS, the second gen or updated model that's used on the Stangs is called the EPAS, iirc you cant just change the CPU it comes together at least on the EPAS it does. I do believe there was a bulletin out, Dewey...

Edit, I saw the unit for sale on the iternets for $795.00, but I'm like you, they need to fix it...

        Recall ???

Ford not telling the customer there is a recall on this stuff ???

        Ford Recall Information << Page 1 -- Page 2 >>

NEWS: Ford is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Ford Explorer vehicles; POWER STEERING GEAR
Report Receipt Date: MAY 29, 2014
        NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V286000
        Component(s): POWER STEERING GEAR
Potential Number of Units Affected: 179,027

JUNE 2014 -- Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Ford Explorer vehicles manufactured May 17, 2010, through February 28, 2012. The affected vehicles may experience an intermittent connection in the electric power steering gear, which can cause a loss of the motor position sensor signal resulting in a shut down of the power steering assist. If the vehicle experiences a loss of power steering assist it will require extra steering effort at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) software, free of charge. If a vehicle shows a history of a loss of motor position sensor signal when the vehicle is brought in for the recall remedy, its steering rack assembly will be replaced, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by July 25, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S06. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

          Electronic P/S is taking over

BMW first used it when the Z4 was introduced.

We thought it was because they couldn't ever find a way to cure all of their P/S leak problems

Thanks guys. I sent that www.safercar.gov link him and told him to call the service manager and see what he has to say about it. Ought to be an interesting response because the descriptions of the recalled problem is EXACTLY as my family member described what happened to me each time it happened.

I *think* it was Prestige Ford, but I'm not 100% certain.

Seriously man. I like new vehicles, but not enough to deal with the BS that seems to be a factory option.

Seeing crap like this problem only makes me want to avoid anything new. The steering box and P/S pump on my old jeep have 200,000 trouble free miles on them and if I ever have to fix them it only takes grabbing a cheap rebuilt part from the nearest parts store.
