  • Sold a vehicle... give me some advice

So I sold my vehicle on a spur of the moment type deal. Took the cash, signed the title and off the guy went. He tells me he will get with me later (doesn't live too far from me) about a bill of sale to transfer the title.

Fast forward about 3 days and I text him to let him know I found the middle headrest for the back seat in my garage and he can get it when we meet up for the bill of sale. He tells me he has to wait until the first of the month (June) for the money to pay the sales tax.

Fast forward another week and I get a photo bill in the mail from the new Chisolm Trail tollway for my vehicle hours after I sold it to him. I text him again, tell him about the bill and let him know that I will need money for it when we do the bill of sale, and I would like my plates back. I point blank ask him if I should expect any more bills in the mail for this type of thing, and he says "not sure", but then states he will compensate for any. That was on May 27th.

Hadn't heard from him since, and I text him hours ago with no response. What would you do? What can I do at this point to protect myself from any actions he has done or might do prior to transfering the title?

    Thanks in advance..

You can fill it out online for free. I used it when I sold my 4Runner and 99 GT. Not sure what it will do for outstanding bills though. I think you have a 10 day grace period from the date of sale.

That's why I always remove the plates when selling a vehicle. Some people get whiny about it, but tough. It's your right to do so and it saves you a lot of headache. It forces them to register it, otherwise they'll drive it until the sticker runs out.

You can submit the vehicle transfer notification online. However, I doubt you even have enough of this guys info to properly fill it out.

Just hope the guy does not have an accident while it is still in your name.

Thank you Eric, I have rarely sold or bought from individuals...so I didn't know the best way to do things. I found the form, looked up all his info and submitted it. I bet I get a txt from him tomorrow... I gave his email address as well

Cool, glad it worked for you. Now hopefully you won't get stuck with the toll fees.

If he contacts you just let him know the police just called you and wanted more info and a statement. They are reviewing the situation for possible tax evasion.

After a gal I sold a car to years ago failed to change the title to herself, I always take the plates. Had some legal issues and fees that was a pain to deal with.

As said before some people whine about it but it forces them to do the paperwork.

                    Just my 2 cents,

Submit a VTR-34 to the dmv. Call them and get a customer service employees email. Email them the VTR-34 for the date you sold it. They will give you a letter to hand over to the photo enforcement agency. Let them pursue him. I got mine dropped that way. Fast forward 6 months he comes knocking on my door with my old license plate begging me to apply for a new title cause he lost it and cant afford a bonded title.

I pull the plates + the tag and notify Austin online. A car running around under your name and no proof of a bill of sale is a huge liability to you.
