If I can drive 40 miles and be in my car for an hour and a half to two hours, you sure as hell can do it too.
Except that there are always other people on the road who really do not need to be driving in icy conditions.

Prudent driving in icy weather does no good when other folks lose control of their vehicles and start swerving wildly across several lanes. Then it becomes a matter of asshole pucker-factor, white knuckles and luck.

Last year was nice when it snowed so hard. Schools closed + scared people staying home = easy drive in. I'm hoping it's the same this year.

You also have those living in outer lying areas, where there are no sand trucks, etc. For instance, our office manager lives in Hope, TX. They don't get serviced by sand trucks, ever. Add in that her place backs up to the lake, and is at a lower elevation than the FM road she lives on. She can't even get up her driveway sometimes. I completely agree with Mike though. People abuse it. I don't get the luxury of not going in the office, since I'm less than 3 miles away, and don't have to get on a highway. My boss lives in Lucas, and is there regardless of weather. If the roads are too bad for me to get out and make calls, I'll still be at the office working.

The last really bad ice storm was around early 2003. I remember well because the first night I spent at a fire station so I wouldn't have to drive home. After the second midnight shift I worked, it took me 4 hours to get from FTW to Ennis.

1978, it was on New Years eve. I was on my way to the deer lease in my brothers 78 camaro. It was an interesting ride. In response to their message, if someone gets hurt going to work. You could probably sue the shit out of them for that message

I'm going in early, by 6am, before the freezing temps. I'll be there alone on the clock with nothing to do because nobody else is in. I'll stay for 11 hours then, make my way back home 4 miles away.

No, that's why I have banked time off so I don't have to drive 40 miles if I don't want to.

The only difference is in my company, we are 24x7. If everyone calls in there would be no support. If there is no support, there are no jobs.

I work in an environment where jobs are constantly outsourced. I believe in working harder and being thankful for not having my job sent to KL or India. I let the small things of taking an hour or two get to work slide. We are at times where unemployment is nuts. If it comes time to weed out the "mess" then I like knowing that I go above and beyond. It has worked for the past 4 years and is continuing to work for me.

I hate people who complain nonstop. People drive in this shit all the time up north, I am sure you can manage a day or two in Texas.

                              Just my opinion.

Yeah, I don't mind driving in it so much as dealing with other drivers. There's way too many overpasses between my home and FTW and there's usually 1-2 foolish drivers on each one of them.

X2 on being thankful for one's job. I have many years by choice with the same employer and that's one of the reasons I have a lot of time off banked up.
