Round Rock police shot and killed a dog Friday inside its owner's home. The owner was at work when it happened.

Russell Lane says he got an alert that his alarm system was going off this morning. Minutes later his neighbor called saying shots had been fired inside his home.

Russell Lane does not have children, but he did have a dog that was like a child to him, until Friday morning.

"He was 8 years old when they killed my best friend," Lane said.

Lane says his alarm system went off before 9 a.m. He says his front door is difficult to shut and likely came open. He got an alert on his cell phone while at work and disarmed the system.

Within minutes of him doing that his neighbor called to say Round Rock police were there and shots were fired.

When Lane arrived officers told him his Rottweiler, Bullet, was dead.

"There's a sign in my Window that says beware of dog and you go all the way in my house with no sign of forced entry and murder my dog eight minutes from the time the alarm went off. You didn’t give me time to disarm it or anything before you killed my dog," Lane said.

    Bullet had his own bedroom.

"That’s where Bullet sleeps, they could've seen him from right here," Lane said.

This is where he was when he was shot. Police took his body, but Lane found hair on the floor and two bullet holes in the wall.

"I understand if he got out and you were scared for your life because he was an aggressive dog, and you kill him out in the streets to protect someone but you don't come in this dogs house in his place and murder him," Lane said.

Round Rock police say when they responded to the alarm call, an officer made 8-10 announcements of police through the cracked front door. Three officers then went in to clear the house. The officer claim when they walked toward the bedrooms, Bullet came out in an aggressive manner. One officer fired, but said Bullet kept coming after him. Another officer fired. Still they say that Bullet didn’t stop. So an officer fired again bringing the shot count to seven.

The department says the shooting is now under review.

Lane went to the police department to meet with officers. A supervisor came back to the scene to re-examine it.

"I can assure you, they won't get away with killing Bullet in this house," Lane said.

Of the seven shots Lane says officers told him bullet was hit five times. Police have released his body. Lane will have him cremated.

Eight minutes from alarm going off to shots fired? That has to be some kind of record.

Always wondered why police did the job of the security company. You pay the security company to monitor your alarm and all they do is call the cops when it goes off and cash your checks.
The false alarm rate is over 98%...
