  • Picked up an antique mower today

Has anyone ever heard of a Bachtold chain drive shredder? This thing has been under a tarp in my dad's barn for 20 years and I finally talked him out of it. I'm going to be working on restoring it but I'm wondering if anyone has heard of it and where I can find parts. The original engine is gone so I picked up a new 6.5hp to fit on it but it's missing a couple pulleys and the like. This thing was a beast growing up, it's self propel would drag you through brush like a riding mower and it would chop down 1/2 inch thick trees like it was nothing.

Anyone seen one of these before?

That looks like it but the base, instead of the wheel with spines on it, is a steel deck with a big ass blade under it. I'll have pictures up in a bit. I've been sanding on it for a few hours.

I have seen similar designs, just not that brand. I am restoring my Granddad's 1939 Sears Handyman tractor. Has these big steel cleat wheels and big old Briggs I just got running.

Everything we have now is just as dangerous. It just has fancy plastic covers over it.

50s and back had some crude shit tho. Using wood soaked in oil for bearings.

It does look dangerous, but back in that day pretty much everyone who owned one realized this. Notice there aren't a billion fucking disclaimer stickers plastered all over it.
