  • Question about bonus and filing taxes

Just got my w2 and did a tax return estimator, block 1 was 60k and block 2 (taxes paid) was 11,500. And my estimated return was 2100. I did get a 30k bonus that I paid 7500 in taxes. I am single, no mortgage, and no dependents. How can I get more of that back? Pisses me off when pieces of shit get a big tax return for popping out a kid or not making any money.

I was at dinner with my girlfriend and her friend, and the friend was bragging about how big her tax return was going to be because of her kids, and then tried to convince my girlfriend that we should marry and have kids so we can get a larger tax return.

I used the H and R tax estimator.

Next time she brags, ask her how much it costs to feed and clothe those kids on a yearly basis. That will shut her trap.

tax return with kids < cost to have them

Many are, Denny. You know that... To answer the question, you need more deductions. Keep all your receipts this year, and go see a CPA. If you have uniform costs, those can be deducted. Dry cleaning costs can be deducted. Buying a house=deductions.

true, but not for tax-filing purposes.

Be careful with that. Not every uniform situation is tax deductible. Uniforms such as those for waitstaff are. But when I was doing PT work driving limos, we couldn't deduct the cost of a suit.

Every dollar you make between $32,550 and $65,725 falls in the .25 tax bracket. $7500 of $30k is 25%. For what you say you made, that's how much they were supposed to take out of it.
Unfortunately like others said, you need deductions to get more back. Your statement that you are single with no mortgage pretty much sums it up. It always pissed me off too when I was in your boat. Now I've got a mortgage and a family so I finally have a lot of deductions but there is a reason they let you deduct that stuff - kids and houses are fucking expensive.

LOL at complaining about getting 2k back on a 30k/year salary.

Don't forget that in TX you can deduct sales tax since there is no state income tax. If you didn't keep receipts there is a calculator here you can use.

You need a better CPA. It's my understanding that if the job requires you to dress a certain way, you can use a portion of those costs as a tax deduction. I'm not sure on buying a suit, but dry cleaning, ect.

Every job requires you to dress in clothes.

I never understood why self employed people can claim their gas. I am self employed I just choose to be contracted by a large company and get benefits. I have to drive myself to work everyday just like the landscaping guy does.

Self employeed people do not get to claim mileage or gas to and from the office and their home, they do however get to claim mileage from the office to client and back to the office, as do w2 employees.
