lol. Good luck dude. My parents never found anything that worked with me in regards to school; grounding, taking shit away, I didn't care. My problem was boredom. From the 4th grade on I basically sat in each class and read novels all day, and did what ever minimal work I could get away with to make a 70. I probably spent more time figuring out how many assignments I could get away with completely ignoring and getting a zero on and still pass the class than on the actual work I did. Seeing in the news what passes as "school" these days I feel really bad for parents. I wish mine had sent me to private school in retrospect, but I really have no idea if it would have helped.

Why are his grades bad? Does he not find it challenging, is he a slacker, just plain dumb, can't pay attention?
I would setup a meeting with his teacher first and find out exactly what's going on at school. My wife is a teacher and she constantly tells me stories of how just about anytime they have a parent-teacher conference (as is mandatory at the school she was at) the parents never had any idea of any problems the kids were having at school. It was like the home and school were two totally different worlds. Go talk to the teachers, a good teacher will gladly sit down with you and figure out what's going on and create a plan of action to fix the situation.

well as a single dad i can tell you this.......
with +/- one week left of school, you've picked a great time to start worrying about grades!

One of my personal favorites was making my son write out in full the Declaration of Independence. If that goes by quickly, you can always hit the Bill of Rights, Frost's favorite, the Constitution, etc.
Monitor bathroom breaks, cannot eat until hits milestones, etc.

My son has moved pallets of bricks, ran laps at the school track, chopped wood, picked weeds, driven a box of deck screws into wood by hand. Get creative!
