Also, if you've never been to the mountains I'd think twice about a convertible. I had a hoodie on in summer.

When I was looking last year for a place to take off to last minute for a couple days, Denver had the highest rental prices of all the places I looked. I could get a cheap flight there, but the rental made it just as expensive as Vegas and a few others I was looking at.

That is unfortunately true. Sometimes you can even get a hotel which would be cheaper than a rental.

Get AAA.

They are partnered with Hertz, and renting a car as a AAA member is about a 50% discount, sometimes more.

Example, Hertz offers an Economy Car for $1017/wk without a discount, but it only costs $442/wk with the AAA discount. Denver seems to be high as giraffe pussy as far as cars go. And unfortunately the Hertz at Denver Airport doesn't have any convertibles available.

The Premium AAA membership costs $120/yr and the savings from this rental would cover that. Not to mention all the badass deals you'll also get on hotels and travel offers, and the standard AAA services for tows and auto repairs.

For a grand, why doesn't he just buy a vehicle and then either sell it or leave it there?

I'm a cheap SOB.. Last year I rented a Fiat for 12 bucks a day.. Ran the crap out of it for a week, got 30+ mpg and spent a little over 100 bucks on the rental.

Eh, the weather is fine, but I'd prefer something with 4wd and a little bit of ground clearance so you're not limited to pavement.

Yep, one of the few perks for working with AA. We get the Interline /AA discounts. Car was 15 a day and with the discount went to 12. Just needed a car to get around so picked the cheapest. Have to say the car surprised me.

Don't go cheap in the mountains. I did once and got a pt cruiser. It had a hard time going up the mountains even in low gear.

If you're in the National rewards program, you can rent the cheapest one online then pick any car in the "Emerald" row. Normally, you can go inside to the agent and ask to pay a small difference to rent a "premium car." Last week, I got an Infiniti q60 for about $260

If you walk into an Enterprise office and book directly with someone they have a little more room to negotiate than a website. Airport locations cost more because they have to pay higher taxes and usage fees. It's convenient, you pay for the convenience. If your hotel offers a shuttle you can probably get a car delivered and save $8 a day or so.
