  • How does an old Bug do in snow and ice?

My only real experience with snow and ice is from here in Texas, and a small stint I did up in Tulsa for a while. So I guess I'm considered "inexperienced" by the pro's out there.

I have 3 vehicles to choose from, the 2006 Colorado, which does absolutely horrible in anything more than a completely dry road. Then the 2004 Chevy 1 ton van, which would be ideal(I think) because of the amount of weight stacked up in the back of it, but if I wreck the van, my business will be screwed. Then the 1964 Bug, slammed, stock 40hp motor.

How do the old Bug's do in the snow and ice?

I'll have to leave for work about 5am, and come back home around 2pm. So hopefully it won't be so bad first thing in the morning, guess I'm more worried about the afternoon.

I'd go with the beetle, weight over the drive wheels, and skinny tires to cut through the snow. It is low, but I don't think it's too low to drive in bad weather.

Vehicles on ice all drive about the same, stopping on the other hand, sucks with ALL vehicles!

The bug shouldn't be too bad, but the afternoon is going to be the nastiest of the weather.

Old vw's in general are great in the snow. Nothing is good on ice.

Throw a few sand bags up front to help with steering.

If you also run into some deep water, just go slow and you will "float" over it. My father, who lived on the Gulf coast, had a VW in the 60's and it would, on occasion, lift off the road in water flooded streets along the coast.
