I have been known to just tell the server this:
"As of right now, you are getting a 20% tip. You fuck up, screw around, don't fill my drink, etc. etc. it goes down based on how many times and how badly. You do everything perfect and are a good server it goes up. Your choice. I'll have Ice Tea thanks."

I don't do chili's, and have never picked a to go order up at curbside, but I'd treat it the same as picking up a To Go order from the bar. I tip on to go orders, because it takes the bartender away from tipping customers, to prepare it, check it, add condiments, etc.
btw...i live in wide awake wylie...i don't have a lot of choices for a quick meal, so i'll drop by chili's and pick something up to take home from time to time.

I never understand people who bitch out waitresses guy at the fast food line before they get their food. I don't do it every time, just when I've been places where I have gotten shitty service in the past. You would be surprised how many servers appreciate honesty. If you tell them up front how much they can make and what not they will work harder and do their jobs properly. I am a regular customer at a Chilis where I did that before and even if the guy I said it to isn't waiting on me he comes by the table and talks for a bit. Try it some time, it really does work.

I am a fair tipper. To some I am a very generous tipper. I have left tips bigger than the bill. But if you give me awful service with attitude, you will not get any where near 15 %. You will be lucky to get 2 percent if anything. Nothing in the book says I have to tip. They are earned. Just because you expect it, does not mean you have earned it.

But, again, I've been there, so I know what's right. Also, if I'm picking up to go orders, it's for 10+ ppl, usually a business lunch. And that takes a bit of time to assemble, more so than a single order to go."PSH!!!"

I generally tip well, but those of you that think tipping is required are nuts. All my friends that have been/are waiters except one hate me for it, but my "tip" to them is get a job where your income is not determined by some jackhole that's in a bad mood that day. I've never had to be a waiter (although I have done food service [cleaning BBQ pit for $5.25/hour]), so I guess I'm fortunate in that respect. All that said I've never left less than a couple of dollars (I think that was Chili's on a $15 tab).
