But since asked, I'm an overtipper. Been there, done that. I've tipped as much as 100%, and as little as 5%. Really depends on the situation. 30-40% is a good average though.
Pretty much. Regardless of the food, servers have to make their rent.

They don't have to make the entire month off my burger and fries. I'm usually at 15-20%. Crappy service will get 10%, REALLY bad will get a dollar or two. I've only stiffed once or twice, and it was BAD. Guy never refilled drinks even though they were empty by the time someone ELSE brought our food, and never even came back to the table-to find he had taken my order wrong.

I'm generally in the 20% range, more if great service, less if bad service.

I was really good at waiting tables when I was in college and I rarely got over a 20% tip. I would always get the customer review cards with 10s across the board but people generally left in the 15-18% range.

If I am just drinking usually just a dollar a drink unless they are really weak .. the faster i get drunk the more money i want to give you ..

food is usually no less than 15 % unless service was bad ..
under 10 dollars is an automatic 5 bucks ..
and if i had 8 drinks and there are only 5 on my tab usually a lot more generous ...

You are absolutely right, crappy service warrants a crappy tip, if any. Being in sales, I am very aware what it takes to keep a "client" happy. If you ignore me all night, I'm gonna ignore you when I sign the slip.

That hasn't happened to me as of yet though, I usually get servers that are willing and eager, and I tip accordingly.

Pardon my ignorance, but what movie was that from?

Same here. I think there was one other time I left no tip, but can't even remember it, and I used to eat out a TON. Certainly not the norm.

                    Movie was Reservoir Dogs.

Nice Guy Eddie: C'mon, throw in a buck!
                      Mr. Pink: Uh-uh, I don't tip.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't tip?
Mr. Pink: Nah, I don't believe in it.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't believe in tipping?
Mr. Blue: You know what these chicks make? They make shit.
Mr. Pink: Don't give me that. She don't make enough money that she can quit.
Nice Guy Eddie: I don't even know a fucking Jew who'd have the balls to say that. Let me get this straight: you don't ever tip?
Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.
Mr. Blue: Hey, our girl was nice.
Mr. Pink: She was okay. She wasn't anything special.
Mr. Blue: What's special? Take you in the back and suck your dick?
Nice Guy Eddie: I'd go over twelve percent for that.
Mr. Pink: Look, I ordered coffee. Now we've been here a long fucking time and she's only filled my cup three times. When I order coffee, I want it filled *six* times.
Mr. Blonde: Six times. Well, what if she's too fucking busy?
Mr. Pink: The words "too fucking busy" shouldn't be in a waitress's vocabulary.
Nice Guy Eddie: Excuse me, Mr. Pink, but I think the last fucking thing you need is another cup of coffee.
Joe: Alright ramblers, lets get rambling. Hey, who didn't throw in?
                      Mr. Orange: Mr. Pink.
                      Joe: Mr. Pink? Why not?
                      Mr. Orange: He don't tip.
Joe: He don't tip? Whaddaya mean you don't tip?
Mr. Orange: He don't believe in it.
Joe: Shut up! Com'on you cheap bastard, I paid for your breakfast.
Mr. Pink: Alright, since you paid, I'll throw in, but normally I would never do this.
Joe: Nevermind what you would normally do. Just throw in your goddamned buck like everybody else.

                        Exceptional service = 30%+
                        Average service = 12%-20%
Shitty service = a note saying "Better Luck Next Time."

I used to be a server once upon a time so I am more generous than most. But it is all dependant on the food/drink and service. I'll generally tip about a dollar a drink, unless the drinks taste like watered down coke with a splash of Jack and a whole bunch of ice, then I become a cheap bastard. Same with food. If I get what I asked for and there are minimal mistakes that adds to it. Service is definitely the big one. If you take my order than disappear you arnt getting a good tip. Plain and simple. If I have to flag you down everytime I need something you might as well consider every wave from me a dollar out of your pocket.

just want to point out that, just because someone else brings your food doesn't mean your server isn't doing their job. It is likely that they are off delivering someone else's food. This is standard practice at most restaurants.
