Staying on the Riverwalk in San Antonio is always a good time. Some shopping and good restaurants down there. I recommend this hotel...

You could Amtrak it to San Antonio btw. The station is less than a mile from the Alamo. Hopefully my wife will get PCSd to Fort Sam soon, I love that town.

The Bay area, Napa Valley, anywhere along the coast, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Lake Oroville, Monterey Bay, Carmel By the Sea, Mt. Diablo. All within a half days drive.
