I think of execution a little differently than some, apparently. To me it's not a "punishment" in the traditional sense. I consider it a simple purge of someone that no longer needs to live in our society. And even though I do not believe in a God, I think that fits the ideology of Christian belief. The goal is not punishment, and the true judgement / punishment will be handled by God.

I'm not a proponent of an "eye for an eye". Of course, as is in our nature, I crave retribution. But in my logical mind I know that it serves no real purpose. As a deterrent or otherwise.

I think UTAH was the last one who still used the firing squad. I remember when the news was buzzing with the last guy who was sentenced to a firing squad, and then went to court to still go out with a firing squad when they changed the state law.

Many Muslim countries give the victims family members the right to actually kick the chair out from under the murder at the gallows or to pardon them and allow them to go free or to serve a reduced sentence. They also allow the killer to pay blood money to the family of the victim and if the family accepts the payment the killer is spared death.

Because I think it's cruel. If he's condemned to die, I think it should be quick and painless. Constitutionality aside, I don't think that harsher punishments would deter the people that wind up on death row in the first place. I don't think the final consequences of their actions play too strongly into their decision making prior to or during the act.
