They are supposed to, but it doesn't always happen that they turn people away.

well I'm about 15 minutes from the border right now so we're going to go over there after work tomorrow or the next day and just see what's up. I have my passport, so we're just going to do a practice run and just see what happens.

Even if you do get across you will also be checked on your way back through and most likely it wont be the same person. You don't want to know what they do to those people that get passed the checkpoint going in.
