Thanks! She's getting up there in age though...I can't imagine what it'll be like when she goes.

Whatever you decide with, best of luck! The absolutely most important thing with any dog is training. If you want to really enjoy it, training has to be the initial priority.

Check out these books, if you really feel like checking out the author's credentials, do it. He wrote the military and Disney's training manual in the middle of the century and they are still in use today.

I missed this post, and yes, he had his own badmotherfucker collar. I miss him a lot, he was the best dog Ive ever seen or heard of. He lived to be ~12yo, way past the average 8 years of a dog his size.

He was awesome around my daughter, would lay there and let her crawl all over him, pull his ears and jowls, etc without even a whimper.
When we brought her home from the hospital, I think he stayed up all night for a while watching her in the crib.

Duke is my mastiff, he's a pretty cool dog. He was abandoned at a rent house when the tenants got evicted, and the property owner brought him home trying to figure out what to do. He kept him in the back yard, and had 3 or 4 Chihuahua type dogs that would terrorize him. Best I can tell, he thinks he is about their size. He's sweet as can be and just wants to be petted, a rawhide, and a nap. I spent some time with obedience, and my 3yo daughter gives him commands that he follows immediately. Its funny to watch her telling this dog that is eye to eye as tall as she is, 5 times her weight, and him just comply, even if he doesn't want to.

            • I'm too big and clumsy and way too often drunk to have a small dog. I would no doubt roll over, step, or fall on it and crush it to death or cause serious injury. Besides, small dogs don't exactly do a great job of scaring away would-be intruders.

Both ours are great with our 1 year old daughter. In fact they are very protective of her and put up with her shit (climbing all over them, ridding them, pulling at their faces, etc) so well.
This. I am a foster with LBR. It's a great organization and it'll allow you to get hands on with the breed before fully committing to it. They are great though. Gentle, good with kids, loyal. They are people dogs. They also like to think they are lap dogs, often not realizing their own size. It just makes them that much more lovable though.

We want a large dog. We have no kids though we plan to eventually. We do have an inside cat. Not looking for something that is crazy energetic. Don't mind walking it once a day and we have a decent sized back yard.

                        Go! Pictures encouraged.
Just going from this post, I think you would be happy with a Labrador Retriever. But they shed a LOT. So if that bothers you, you might look into Weimaraners, although they tend to be more energetic than labs. Both breeds are large, friendly, and good with kids.

We had three Weimars when I was growing up. Another great dog! Loves the water like the Labs.

So pretty with that grey coat and what a hunter. Ours were able to catch sparrows in the low bushes we had around the house by sitting patiently and pointing at them and then lunge for the kill! They rarely missed!

                              • 8 days until I'm in my new (and first) house. As soon as i get settled in I'll be picking something up.

I looked at some local rescue places online and i wish i wouldn't have because found 2 puppies that i can't stop thinking about.

Both males, one is a great Dane /doberman mix and the other is a mastiff /boxer mix. There was a whole litter of those but only 1 male.

I'll post up what and when i get a pup
