It's $30 for the service and the $30 processing fee was if you deduct the service fee out of your return. I used a credit card and shouldn't get charged the extra $30.

For example, last year we got about $12k back and the tax preparation fee was about $450.

I'm wanting to try Turbotax, but the wife would rather pay $$$ for someone to do them.

      Pros/Cons?
Just to let you know a CPA is not allowed to charge a percentage based on refund amount. So if you owed the tax prep would be free?

          Hmmmmmm, very interesting.

Our fee has varied every year with the amount of our refund.

I just used TurboTax Deluxe this past weekend. I've used it the last 4 years. However, I only have mortgage interest and taxes to write off so it's pretty simple. If I was expecting $12k on my return, I'd probably let someone do it! Mine should be about 6% of that! LOL!

Correct. It's free to e-file. Those of you having to pay more than the software fee, could have elected to give a CC# or bank account # for the tax prep fee. Since you didn't, you get hit another $30 for convenience.

I used turbo tax premier. It covers quite a bit of stuff. IMO its fast easy and Ive never had a problem usng it. They have different setups depending upon your situation but its a step by step deal and easy to use.

It's possible you get hit with a per form charge. Some years you may have less, some years you may have more, hence the variance.

I tried Taxact.com this year. It was great, the only fee was $14.95 for my state income tax.

<--- TaxACT user. Been using their E-file for years with no issues, and it's easy as can be. Best of all, it's free, minus the time it takes you to plug in your info.

Use Turbo Tax. Mine's just general deductions (mortgage, charities, etc) and works fine for my purposes.

Anyone go to H&R Block and file taxes? I filed mine on January 21st and got an Emerald Card and was told the money would be directly deposited in 8-15 days. No luck so far..... Anyone else do this and how long did it take? Mine was free and I'm only getting about $1,200 back this year.

I have used Turbotax the past few years with no issues, though I have a basic filing.
