EGR delete, straight pipe, and tune usually do it.

Studs and gaskets aren't necessary unless they're already blown, or you're planning on making big power.

They will blow. Doesn't take big power. You said bulletproof, so...

For the record, I wouldn't do it until it starts showing signs of a blown gasket, either. But with a tuner making any kind of power, it's just a matter of time. Mine is finally starting to show residue around the cap with 140k and a tuner since 100k.

Thanks guys. It looks even better now. That silver around the headlights is now black. Roof rack is gone. Fog lights and lower grill installed. If I don't get what I want for it I'll just keep it and one day fall back in love with it.

130k on my 5.3 runs good. Won't be buying anything else except maybe a lsx trans am. The wife will probably be getting a used Lexus rx330

Mileage is relative, my 6.0 did a ton better than my 7.3.

With a straight pipe they sound great. Gets rid of the highway drone too.
                Shitty trans as well.

I've always heard these transmissions were good up to at least 450 hp. Mine has been fine, although I'm not putting down quite that much power. Wait, are you talking about the 7.3 or 6.0?

I don't have any recent pics of the Explorer. I should detail it and get serious about selling it, I suppose.

It deserves as much. Every time we come visit (acknowledging it isn't that often since the move) I always feel bad that it is just parked, with nobody enjoying it.

Then again, I can appreciate your hesitance considering all of the time, thought and money you have put into it.

                      he's talking about the 7.3

the 5R behind the 6.0 is a stout transmission

6.0's get better mileage than 7.3's once tuned properly

I was getting shit mileage on my 6.0 forever. 11-12 mixed. SCT canned street tune didn't help. I recently got a new FICM with the Atlas 80 tune, switched to 5w40, and added Rev-X. Now I'm getting 16-17 mixed. I'm fucking stoked about it.

I contend the FICM tuning does more for mileage than an ECM tune if you've been updated to the later strategies.

                          get some custom tunes BTW

7.3. The auto's were junk until the 5R came out.

A lot of it is due to the ridiculously small cooler. I swapped ours our for a 5r towing package one, just in case. Keeping the temps down drastically extends the life of the transmission. 100k miles on a tuner, exhaust, and intake. Only issue we've ever had is the leaky fuel bowl seal. The fucker has been filled with gasoline due to a had station messing up, and it didn't hurt a thing. Try that with a 6.0 I'm just a big advocate of the 7.3, because they are ready to roll as is. Every single power joke that I've worked on has been a 6.0 or 6.4.
Oh, Jluv, get a new degas cap first. Those are prone to failure. I have multiple buddies running custom quick trick tunes without any issues for years. Get rid of that egr. Btw, one of these guys is running the egr "spool" as a delete. He's put a ton of hard miles on his truck towing, in traffic, etc. It's an easy way to prevent catastrophic failure and "delete" your egr for a very small price. No one has ever reported an egr failure after installing one either.

I swapped the cap the day I noticed the residue. That wasn't it, unfortunately.

The EGR was deleted shortly after I bought the truck.
