  • Police Officers Warned About Civilian Camera Encounters

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Dallas police are putting out a warning to some of their own people. Members of the DPD staff are being told about an officer’s encounter with a woman who was following him with a video camera. The woman, like so many others, is part of a movement to keep an eye the police.
Now some officers say the tactics of those shooting video could put lives in jeopardy.
Police are used to having run-ins with armed bad guys. But lately they’ve also had some disturbing with law-abiding citizens, armed with cameras.
It’s not a job. Dallas resident Avi Adelman calls it a passion. “Generally I’ll go out a couple of nights a week,” he said. “I’m a crime geek. I run a police database for the public.”
Adelman took photos from recent crime and accident scenes in Dallas to post on his blog. Others also use video cameras to make online postings.

So how long before Dallas makes it a crime to film their police in action? With DPD's reputation, they better get on it quick.

If they aren't doing anything wrong, they don't have anything to worry about

Frost are you related to the OP? Holy shit all he posts is FTP threads.

Now back to the cameras. I could care less if I am video taped. Hell I have a body mic and camera on for any calls for service anyways. Now if some random motherfucker were to just follow me around all day and invade my space that would be annoying. It would be no different then some random stranger following you all day at work and then in public. Videoing the cops can turn into interfering with the investigation, or officer safety issues. Keep your distance, be respectful, and I see absolutely no issues with it. The problem you have now days is that some people are just trying to be assholes. They want confrontation so they can get their fifteen minutes of fame. Also there is a reason some things should not be photographed and just thrown out there on the web. Really, would you like your dead wife's picture, from a accident, posted on someone's blog?

See, if those body cameras and car cameras actually were always on and uploaded instantly so that the PD and cops couldn't delete the information on them or 'forget' to turn them on, this wouldn't be necessary. Why should citizens be respectful to record cops when they usually aren't when they are recording a citizen? There are good cops but I have yet to see one say "Hey, if this recording you thing is bothering you, I'll turn it off and if me running behind you for 10 miles on your bumper is distracting, I'm sorry, I was running your plates."

Are cops who are assholes wanting their 15 minutes of fame? And there is a reason cops don't like cameras that they can't control. I can think of a few this past week where cops shot innocents, and a few more where citizens are shot in the back and the recordings are 'lost."

Yup. That's all he ever does. Just parrots anything negative he finds in the way of unfavorable blurbs regarding the police. Not ever a mention of the myriad of positive and affirming stories that are out there in spades.

                    Hmm..

A reasonable and cogent response that will likely fall onto to deaf ears. That kind of fodder has the wrong kind of taste. Not enough sensationalism for the police state alarmist - like cyclonescott and his ilk.

Start punishing cops properly and this goes away. If engineers and project managers can gets slaughter charges for mistakes...cops should get murder for murdering.

I agree with king Jason that it's terrible to follow officers for the sake of confrontation, and that accident photos shouldn't be posted. But until officers are properly held accountable, I don't have an ounce of sympathy for them.

And most of our activities are monitored at work so I don't know how you can act like we have much privacy.

Not to mention breaking the blue line is almost never, ever heard of to report on your fellow officers, no matter what crime they have committed.

Yes, when a 'rogue' cop opens fire on an unarmed citizen, their partner doesn't slam them to the ground and cuff them right there. Best case scenario a conflicting report is made, worst case, they help the cover up.

I've got no argument with any of that. Thanks for not inventing a science fiction story and telling us all how terrible this is.
