I love them. I can see a lot more with the camera than I can by looking out the window or using the mirrors. I still do all of the above in my F250, and I even use a front camera on mine so I can fit as far as possible into parking spots without tapping the car (or pole) in front of me. They both come in very handy.
In the Explorer, I can't see out of the back window at all, so the camera is necessary.
I have no problem with the government telling the car makers that they have to start putting these in new vehicles. It will do more good than harm. It's not like I would have pushed for this or even voted for this, but since it's happening, I really can't figure out a reason to be upset over it.
And it's not like they are required to be retrofitted into current and past vehicles.
To me, it's like seatbelts. It's a cheap safety feature that doesn't degrade the appearance or performance of the vehicle at all, so why cry about it?
More shit to go wrong IMO, and when it does they'll probably use it to fail your inspection.

Not so sure of that.
Since 1996, all vehicles have been required to have a third brakelight, the TBL on my car has never worked since I bought it. No issues at inspection as it is not a required pass/no pass item.

The owner of my company, who drives a Mercedes SUV, almost backed into something because his sensors didn't go off. That tells me that all this technology is going to do is keep people from paying attention.
If we're going this route, bring on the self driving cars for the retards. I'll keep my self controlled one. Keep your TPMS, backup sensors, traction control and ASM. No driving motherfuckers.
I was reading something about the Elio earlier today and somebody asked about traction control. On a car with fewer than 70 horsepower. Think about that for a second, let it digest. Yes, that really fucking happened. What are these people doing!? If you need TC on a car with that much power, feel free to go kill yourself.
Got to love the government. Hey, make your product more expensive and less competitive. We have no authority to do this, k thx.

I think stability control was one of the better mandated safety features... It doesn't matter how many HP a car has, anyone can lose control in poor conditions or by over correcting in an emergency maneuver. Features that can keep a car under control keeps other people on the road safer.
Features that are worth buying, people will purchase. Backup cameras are one. We don't need stupid laws to mandate the purchase of something that anyone who can afford them will probably have on their vehicle. TCS/ESC is another in the same category. I would purchase a vehicle with these options just like I would like power windows and air conditioning, but I would also like the option to turn them down.
Its kinda like helmets for motorcyclists, or seat belts. I think you're an idiot if you don't wear one, but I do believe you should have a right to choose to be an idiot.

If one can't keep a car with 70 hp from spinning the wheels, should we really expect them to have any form of car control? I think there should be levels of drivers licenses that relate directly to skill. If you can't drive you get a lowly license that only allows you to drive the most boring of cars (TC and ASM always on, all that stuff, no power, no chance of losing control) and the highest level you should be able to ignore most speed limits and drive the hairiest of cars with no electronic help, should you so choose.
My buddy backed his brand-new Ford Edge with backup camera + 9" screen right into the side of my full-size pickup a few months ago. So yeah, that's gonna fix a lot of issues......
I don't even trust my side mirrors, let alone a camera. I still look all around. It's good for one thing, lining up my truck when I'm loading or unloading something tailgate up of course.
