  • Pay more in taxes because I have a take home service truck?

Iv worked in the oilfield for the past 5 years and have never had to claim any mileage at the end of the year. I started with a new company and the guys are telling me that I have to claim personal usage miles(to and from work) at the end of the year because I have to pay taxes on it. Iv read a little bit of tax code and it seems like thats only for fringe benefits and a service truck is considered equipment so it's exempt?

Sounds like they're trying to push it off on you. Park it in their yard, drive your personal vehicle home, and look for a new gig. Fuck 'em.

By tax law they can do that, but it's really petty to consider mileage to/from work.

The argument is if you have a work truck, you obviously go to many different sites. If this is the case, mileage to/from those sites are work related, even if you're coming from home.

that's chicken shit right there... hard to imagine from an oil field company

I'd leave it there and drive my own vehicle to-from

We always put that our guys are on 24hr call and have never had an issue, but I do have several friends where there companies do make them pay taxes for driving a work truck home.

Start sleeping in the truck at the yard.

It's becoming a common practice for companies in your line of work. All of my family(my dad works for your previous employer and has through many mergers) is with one company or the other in the natural gas field and more than a few of them are in the same boat.

Stephen, call Wes, since the whole Enerven to JW thing last year he has to pay a tax since he takes a company truck home. Only way around it according to JW is park it at the yard and drive your personal vehicle to and from work. Heck all the old Enerven guys got introduced to that their first day of work for JW.

That's some double-dipping bullshit right thar. I am guessing the companies pay taxes on fuel and on registration, right? Why should the employee have to pay an additional tax?

If they require you to be on call and retain the truck, they can't make it a fringe benefit.

Which guys? Other field hands or is upper management/HR telling you this?

If it's the former, I would say it's hearsay. If it's the latter, then drive your personal vehicle to and from the yard.
