MIDLOTHIAN — A man who worked private security for the widow of slain Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle is accused of making more than $6,000 in fraudulent charges on her credit card, according to Midlothian police documents.
Spencer Coursen faces two counts of credit or debit card abuse, a state jail felony punishable by up two years in prison.
Tara Kyle told authorities that Coursen was hired as private security for a book tour for several months last year. She said that during that time, he had access to the home and stayed there on occasion.
“Tara Kyle stated she believes Coursen recorded her credit card information when she asked him to pick up a computer and pay for it with her credit card,” the records state. She told police that she didn't give Coursen the authority to make any other charges.
According to the records, the first fraudulent charge of $1,430 occurred on Dec. 23 to Hertz rental. The second charge was again to Hertz on Jan. 3 for $4,814.
An investigation showed that Coursen added Kyle’s credit card information to his Hertz account in late November and that it was added after Coursen's credit card was declined, the records state.
The fraudulent charges were discovered while Kyle’s brother in law was helping her work on her income taxes, the records state.
Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield were killed in February 2013 at a shooting range in Erath County. Eddie Ray Routh is accused of capital murder in the deaths. Routh’s mother has told the authorities that Chris Kyle was helping him to deal with post traumatic stress disorder.
