My pop did 30 with TI/ Raytheon got a watch when he retired. My uncle did 45 with SWB in west texas. Was working in a man hole splicing wires and a coworker down the way released some gas to clean out the moisture in the pipes. Damn near killed them both. My uncle climbed out retired the day he got out of the hospital.

God damn. lol I had a guy working for me that had been in auto parts since the the 50's. He was 74, still working full time on the back desk. Like damn clockwork every day, and one of the nicest, smartest guys around unless you did something to piss him off. He wasn't afraid to tell a customer that the 94 Camry they were working on was an 87 Chevy 1500 the last time they called and that's why they had the wrong parts.
I don't think he'll ever retire, says he just likes taking care of the customers and his wife passed a year or two ago. If he is ever forced to or his health declines to where it just isn't possible I'm afraid he won't last more than a couple of months. I'm kind of jealous of the drive he has to be honest.
He lost vacation time every year, and I would talk to him at least once a month telling him to take some time off, go on a trip or something. Lost anywhere from a week to two weeks every year unless he was having his knee replaced or something else medical going on. Felt terrible when his wife passed. They had been together over 50 years. The world just doesn't seem to produce guys like him any more.

No shenanigans, cupcakes, gifts or anything, just an email from HR congratulating him on his "milestone achievement". I asked him if he even told anyone....he said "no"! Anyway, just thought I'd share this among the DFWmustangs ballers.
btw your dad is a good guy!"PSH!!!"

Thanks Stephen! He is a good guy, and at least one of his boys turned-out halfway decent, I think. I remember when things were getting bad at work for him and he thought he was gonna get the ax, and he said he hoped to make it to 25 years. That came and went, and he just wanted to hit the 30 year mark, "retire", take his pension, and get another job. That was ten years ago, and he's still truckin along. He did tell me the other day he was probably just gonna hang-on and hit 50 years because "I can't afford to retire!" He also told me one of the managers at work has been there 51 years, so I don't even know what the official company record is. He's a hard-working guy that never calls in sick, visits his Mom(my grandmother) once a week, and goes to junkyards all over the metroplex on the weekends to snag various parts he cleans-up and sells on Craigslist & Ebay for extra money. He still drives the only vehicle my family has ever bought new, a 1986 GMC Jimmy S-15 with over 300k miles on it.

The company I worked for for 28 years changed drastically after being bought by Brazilians. I lasted 4 more years, The Brazilians thing plus Obama being in power, I quit and took SS. Congrads on your dad.Don't worry about what you can't change.
Do the best you can with what you have.
Be honest, even if it hurts.
