Leave wiggle room. If the guy takes it right off the bat and turns out to be worth it give him an early raise and that will increase morale, production, loyalty, you look like the best boss ever, etc....Comment

IMO if the market is tight you'd better come in closer to the top or above if you want want the person.Comment
