The NYPD and FDNY are responding to reports of an explosion and building collapse in upper Manhattan.

According to ABC's New York affiliate, at least 11 people were injured, including one with "heavy trauma." The conditions of the others were not immediately known.

Witnesses reported hearing a large explosion in the five-story apartment building on Park Avenue near 116th Street in East Harlem around 9:30 a.m local time.

“The whole building shook,” one nearby worker told the New York Post.

The fire department confirmed in a tweet that the explosion involves multiple buildings and have escalated the response to five alarms, with 39 units and 168 members responding.

According to public records, the address that firefighters initially reponded to, a 5-story building on Park Avenue, was built in 1910.

Metro North train service into and out of Grand Central Terminal was temporarily suspended as a result.

Photos posted to Twitter appear to show smoke and dust coming from the neighborhood north of Central Park.

There was a big blaze on the left coast yesterday too, in San Francisco, near AT&T Park. No injuries though.

Apparently there were renovations going on at the time.

            $5 on a gas leak.

Apparently there have been several building explosions / building collapses in the area (Harlem) over the last few years.. At least that's what I read on another version of this story.

Maybe shitty old buildings that need to be condemned / demo'd?

Another story on this. Look at the link, there are "updates" at the bottom.

Harlem Explosion Causes Collapse Of Two Buildings, At Least One Person Dead

Two buildings collapsed in East Harlem on Wednesday morning after a massive explosion, leaving at least one person dead.

The buildings, which collapsed around 9:30 a.m., were located at 1644 and 1646 Park Avenue, between 116th and 117th streets. At least 17 injuries have been reported so far, in addition to the one fatality, according to the New York City Fire Department.

Authorities on the scene said Con Ed officials have detected a high level of gas in the area, according to The New York Times.

Metro-North trains have been suspended in and out of Grand Central Station due to debris from the explosion blocking the tracks.

Oh.. It was a tweet on my link, from Keith Boykin:

                              This is the 3rd building collapse in Harlem in the past 5 years. (1) 2009: 270 W. 123rd. (2) 2012: 110 W. 123rd. (3) 2014: 1644 Park Avenue.
