What we have now in education is years of idiotic administrators voted in by the people (Texas board of education) in or appointed by politicians (local ISD administration) and the "think of the children" mentality. Bitchy parents and threats of litigation have so crippled the ability of teachers to teach that they have to act like dictators to be prepared for every situation. Every parent thinks their snot nosed piece of shit is some special gift or something and demand nothing but perfection, there is no being reasonable with parents, "sometimes shit happens" is an unacceptable answer. People and by extension their kids think they're far more valuable than they really are.

In short: Parents have caused the issues with the education system, not the other way around.

That is profound. Where did you log in and forget to log out recently?

And everywhere I go, it's the exact same chains choking the life and humanity out of even the smallest of communities, no matter how far out in the sticks you think you are. The proliferation is mind boggling. I haven't posted anything about it yet, but I drove to Key West last month. It will probably be one of the last trips I take. I'm done.

I dare say that the homeschool co-op my kids attend is darn near utopian in some aspects. We home school during the week and on Fridays they go to the co-op for special classes. Mine are in their 2nd and 3rd year. We knew several of the families and watched their kids grow up in it. Most of them we watched grow are in college or soon to graduate so we had experience being around home school kids for several years. If anything, they are MORE socialized. A parent has to be at the co-op with their child. Most of the kids are pretty well behaved already, but there really aren't any behavior issues. Probably on even better behavior because everyone knows their mama (or daddy) is in the building. There is NO backtalk to teachers or detention, etc. There isn't likely any bullying. Older kids, even high school get along and even socialize with the younger kids. Kids bring toys, wear long hair, play guitar in the halls... When they have free time between classes there is a large foyer area that doubles as a cafeteria where everyone congregates. The teachers volunteer, but they do get paid if they are accepted to teach. They present what they intend to teach and they are reviewed and approved by a committee. They are parents who come from a wide range of background. Some are former public school teachers, engineers, musicians, business owners, etc. The kids are involved with all the same extra-curricular activities as public school and often intermingle because we pay the same tax dollars, they cannot be turned away.

Case in point: I'm watching Top Gear BBC, the current Series, ep 2, and they are in Afghanistan on a military base. They show a line of troops waiting their turn to get a slice from the on base Pizza Hut. Even our active war zones have corporate sponsorship. John Cusack in War Inc. was supposed to be satire, but fuck me if it isn't already well into reality.

I'm kinda with you there. It makes me sad to visit some old towns I remember as a kid and hear how drugs is lurking everywhere. Whitney comes to mind. I had several family members that used to live there. Many of the old neighborhoods have abandoned houses and businesses and some really shady types live there now. Twice they found a meth lab inside one of the public restrooms at Old Fort Park. They ended up closing off that park entirely. I talked to residents telling me about some of the people showing up down there and problems with crime they used to never have before.

Then again, if I were single, places like Slab City sounds intriguing.
