Got a question about committing to a turn at a light

Almost every day going to work I am at an intersection in the left turn only lane. Car in front of me "commits" to turn. He is literally blocking two lanes from the right that also turn left going the opposite direction we are facing.

Light turns yellow, they just sit there. Light turns red...........still sitting there blocking two lanes of traffic trying to figure out why people are pissed at them?

This is not a red light camera intersection. What would you do? Stay with your commitment and go or just set blocking the lanes? This has really baffled me as to what people are thinking at the time?

Visually ensure traffic is slowing or stopping coming from opposite direction, then go for it.

If what Im thinking you are say is that they roll out across the line, and the light turns red, they are in the intersection but sitting there blocking cross traffic, that would be illegal.

Once you enter the intersection (which to me means once you move beyond the white line to stop behind at the light), you should complete the turn as soon as it's safe -- even if it means immediately after it turns red.

It has always been my understanding that if you are in the intersection during the green light, i.e. waiting to take a left turn, you still have the legal right to clear the intersection after cross traffic is clear even if it is shortly after the light goes red.

I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about. If he is trying to turn left and there is oncoming traffic, he should be in the intersection waiting for an opening, and once it appears, he should go. Doesn't matter if it comes from a red light, or a break in traffic.

It's legal to advance into an intersection when you have the light. If the light turns red while you are in the middle of intersection, you just go once it's safe to do so (ie once oncoming traffic is obviously stopping). So sitting in the intersection with your thumb up your ass? You've got me. I've never seen anyone do that, but people do dumb shit.

That's really the only way to make a left turn without waiting for a protected turn at many intersections. I see cops do it, I've done it in front of cops, fairly sure it's 100% legal even if your obviously doing it waiting for the light to go red.

That is exactly what they do. See it several times a week. People trying to turn honking an even if they have room to back up, they just sit there. Smh...
