We actually got a Sealy from Costco before this, slept on it for 6 months and returned it because it was killing my back.

I've had a sleep number King for over 3 years, and love the thing, best mattress I've ever slept on. I even just bought my mom one for Christmas, because she was complaining about her old mattress. After a week, she called me telling me this was the best gift anyone has ever given her, she's never slept better in her life.

I have a firm no-name Queen size mattress and a $100 memory foam pad from Target. The firm mattress keeps away the "valleys" you get over time and the memory foam keeps me cool and comfortable.
I've slept in high-end hotel beds and it's nothing like those, but I sleep great on this combo. Plus it seems like it suits your cheap-ass requirement. When the government pays, the government controls.

But that is me. The old bed I would wake up every night more than once. Back hurting or stiff as nails sometimes.
With that new bed. I can sleep all night without waking up. We will see in about 6months if it was worth it. But no complaints yet.
