  • K&N vs Paper Filters

I know the whole story about paper filters and K&N. I want to give my motor a little oomph, but don't want a CAI. Is it really worth $50 for a K&N through out, or just stick with like a wix paper filter?

They breath better, no doubt. Worth what you pay for them? Who knows? You have to buy about 4-5 years worth of paper filters to offset the price

The oil gets on your MAF, and from what I've heard they don't filter well. Not worth the 2HP

            Try an AEM dryflow filter.

Nobody, "car shit" is generally reserved for The Garage.

I put k&n in all my vehicles. Cannot say whether or not it adds any power, but I don't care about that. I like that they are reusable and I can just hose them off. They also do not seem to get as dirty as fast as the paper ones, or maybe they just breathe better when dirty. I don't pretend to be an expert on it, but I have been happy with them.

I've used K&N filters (either the drop-in or a CAI) on 7 very different vehicles. Every single one got a noticeable MPG gain, and the ones with the CAI got a noticeable power gain as well. The drop-in power gain isn't always noticeable, depending on the vehicle and how the stock air intake/air box is designed.

As for the issue of oil on the MAF, it is no issue...as long as the filter is oiled correctly. I got in the habit years ago of cleaning the MAF every time the air filter was pulled, which is good to do regardless of what kind of filter you use.

I remember reading an article in a car magazine a long time ago. In a lab test, the airflow of a clean K&N was the same as a new paper filter. After something like three months of use, the paper filter was becoming more constrictive while the K&N showed only little change. The final analysis was a K&N cleaned it once a year was roughly the same as putting in a new paper filter every three months.

I had a K&N in my 2004 Mustang. I liked how it looked and sounded. All other vehicles I had after that used paper filters. Mainly because changing a disposable paper filter was so much easier and less messy than undoing hose clamps, spraying a K&N with the cleaner, letting it sit, rinsing it, waiting for it to dry, then reinstalling it.

Everyone in here has probably done it. I did it because I had no room for a standard paper filter with a blower, it's cheap and easy. Truth is none of that shit does anything. If you want more power, you need to get a wrench and get busy. Don't even waste your time with insignificant shit like air filter types.

My last K&N netted me some pretty awesome power numbers. I had it piped into the fender well to pick up cooler air. It fed a Procharger. Now that I think about it, the 21 pounds of boost likely attributed to the power more so than the K&N.......

I put one on the jap truck (drop in) and if I closed one eye and squinted really hard, I could tell a gain in power. But you are talking about a 5500 lb truck. I use them in everything I own. Except the Taurus, after all, it is a Taurus.
