While business is business, you try and help people out like our board members. There are things you can overlook and you keep your mouth shut.

I have had 2 contractors out to my house. Drywall guy who did a great job but left a fucking mess. He was a recommendation off of this board. His crew did a great job and took pride in their work...the downside was they left a mess of trash (cans, lunch bags, etc) and didnt haul away drywall scrap. I can overlook this because they did a phenomenal job.

I had a brick crew out at the house patching up some brick. They did a great job but again, left a mess of cans, trash, cigarette butts. They also didnt clean up any of the brick after they cut it, it just sat in the lawn. While I wasnt that happy, I can overlook it because they did a great job. These are things you dont complain about because it is not worth the time or trying to jew someone out of money.

As for the rest of you, really not surprised. At all.
It was muddy because they dumped the dirt from the holes all over the yard. It would have been wet grass otherwise.

It saved me money in the long run, but the savings wasn't worth the headache. I would have kept searching for another contractor had I known. Hind site is 20/20.

I just had a pool put in and they destroyed pretty much my entire yard, but as expected they repaired all the dirt work and grass.

I did complain to the contractor and to Mike himself. Neither seemed to be to concerned about fixing the problem and I wasn't going to get in a pissing match.

I paid after he hounded me about it and giving me sob stories about a broken truck. The work was complete and I felt I could trust him to follow through with what he said he would do. Again hind site is 20/20. I've had fairly good luck in hiring contractors over the years so I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt. I'm far from naive, but at times go with my gut rather than my head.

Bitches should be cleaning up. I would mention it to Albert because he lives off word of mouth. Contractors aren't very clean in generally sadly.

Never pay if you're not satisfied with the finished product. Even if it's a family member, not paying is the only real leverage you have in order to get the person or company to honor what they said they would do. If they truly did a shit job then they will come back and fix it because they want their money. And if they threaten with taking you to court you tell them go right ahead, after all no one is going to go to court knowing you're going to have pictures of their shoddy and/or unfinished work. So for future if that happens, I'd suggest keeping the cash in your pocket until everything is done and finished to your standards. And you might want to let others know right after it happens. Waiting so long makes it easy for others to question legitimacy.

Oh I completely understand how it's suppose to go down. I chose not to blast him here openly because I saw it not doing much good. I only decided to after he got high and mighty in this thread.

I went about my business and just ensured that none of my friends used him. I'm not worried about my legitimacy to others as the people that know me know me. I do appreciate your advise though as it's all solid advice.

Albert is a great guy and I would use his guys again in a heart beat. We didnt even discuss the drywall scrap haul away as part of the deal. My house is being treated like new construction... they dont haul away the mess. A builder had a cleaning crew do that. I have learned now if I ever did this again to make sure it is in the agreement when we get the bid.

Again, thanks for the recommendation. Albert and his guys did a great job. Did a level 5 smooth drywall finish. He takes pride in his work.

Glad you are happy with the work. He is coming by the office to patch up a bunch of random holes after redoing and adding a conference room.

                              • I had Mike put a roof on my house a few years ago; he did a top notch job and came in at a really good price. His people picked up the nails and trash out of the yard too.

I don't know what happened in this case, but one thing strikes me - when you want work done perhaps it is best to spell out everything that needs to be done in a contract beforehand, and specify the milestones that must be achieved before a payment will be made. That way, everyone knows and agrees on the work to be done and when payments will be made. I see this all of the time in my line of work, and when there is no contract explicitly spelling out the scope of the work feelings get hurt when things go wrong.

Mike - this goes for you too - protect yourself with a contract.
