You have got jack shit. Spill it. If you are referring to what I think you are, you're going to look like a fucking idiot when we're through with the topic.
Go.
As for underbidding, if I can make money, and I'm willing to do it for less than someone else, too bad. I have not one single negative review on my work, not one. Every single job I have done was done right, and that's all there is to that.
Bottom line: If you want good work at a reasonable price, y'all hit me up.
And thanks Jason.

That being said I have a negative review for you. Your crew destroyed the front yard at my rent house and I was told it was par for the course. Did a piss pour job with concrete patches and left a general mess (food wrappers and cans). Again told by your guy it was par for the course. It also took 2 months to get a receipt and final repair paperwork after you were paid. Not to mention I basically begged you to get me quotes on drywall repair, bathroom remodel and new flooring. You never delivered one single quote after I waited around for over a month. Before you tell these people you are trying to feed your family you need to work on your follow through and GC skills.
Edit: I still need someone to stain a fence for me.Last edited by mustang1200; 01-31-2014, 09:21 AM.sigpic

Well...
I'll throw in my $0.02 here:
Asking for and looking at competitor's estimates are industry standard anymore. When my dad had the fire resto company, we would see it daily. In order to work with the insurance catastrophe teams, back then at least, a contractor had to estimate and submit in the same form as the adjusters used, and the main program was around 15k to buy, and 5k for updates, usually annually. Contractors that didnt have that program would use our printout and change the name on top and try to submit it as their own. Usually it didnt work out for them.
On the customer's side of things, we would generally ask if they had any other estimates, and take a look if we could. It was really common for estimates to be a generalized "this is what we will do and this is what it will cost" piece of paper that was written in Word, whereas ours was an itemized list, room by room, wall by wall, and with a breakdown of labor, material and costs. We never undercut any estimates (unless someone else was extremely high from an off the hip estimate) because we didnt have to. The people that wanted the cheapest job were going to get what they paid for in the end, so between us not being covered in paint and wearing a t-shirt with holes in it when we did the estimates, and a real honest breakdown of everything, there wasnt a lot of "up selling" that we had to do.
Most of the time, we didnt want to do work for those that picked the lowest dollar amount on the bottom line, anyway."If I asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses." - Henry Ford

Well this was an interesting read. I got a message from Mike last night telling me this was the second time I did this to him and got several "fuck you's" in the process without knowing wtf he was talking about. I hit the thread briefly after I got out of class, but decided that drinking and smoking cigars with friends carried more weight than dealing this nonsense.
I didn't even realize Mike did fences (figured he was busy enough with the roofing), until I quoted a board member's fence last year. Mike called me and eventually led into asking what I charged per foot on that type of fence then called the board member and told him he'd beat my price. I told the buyer to go with his gut and I got the job. I was mostly annoyed and felt like Mike used the veil of long standing friendship to gain competitive advantage, but I wasn't going to lose sleep over it. Potentially losing one job wasn't a big deal to me, but did cause me to question Mike's character. He's sent me messages telling me he's jealous of my recommendations, he's sent other board members shitty messages for recommending me over him (they can verify if they want to, but I'm not blowing up anyone's spot).
As to Baron's point, I understand the competition in business, especially in construction. This is about as cutthroat of an industry as it gets.
I'm not in this for competition reasons, it's a side business that I'm slowly growing while I'm working on other things. I do find it quasi-interesting that Mike said he was done with the board last year, tired of the drama, the bullshit, etc., but comes back as the wind picks up and we get closer to hail season.
Mike, you're about 9 cards short of a full deck. You have no impulse control, you have a solid history of starting shit and having the drama play out around you (Allen Samuels, the neighbor/masons, Wiley PD, your personal situation, etc), you'll apparently sacrifice a friendship of over a decade for a small amount of cash. Try yoga nigga, you need balance.
