  • Joshua teen falls 3500 ft and lives

    Damn.

A Joshua teen is in intensive care in an Oklahoma hospital after a skydiving accident on Saturday. Makenzie Wethington, 16, fell approximately 3,500 feet to the ground when her parachute apparently malfunctioned. “The whole thing that’s keeping us going is because she’s still alive and really she shouldn’t be,” said Meagan Wethington, Makenzie’s sister. Wethington’s family members said she suffered a broken vertebrae in her back as well as a broken pelvis. The teenager is also experiencing bleeding in her brain, lungs and liver, in addition to several other injuries related to the fall.

fter Wethington made his jump, he watched Makenzie's jump from the ground and knew something was wrong.

"She’s just now coming out of the plane, but she’s flipping out of the plane," Wethington said.
      uh, really?

The parents are at fault for attempting to, "finally," fulfill a 16 year old's, "lifelong," dream. Demands to go sky diving, get tattoos, or travel by a minor should always be met with parental reminders that kids' efforts should be aimed at graduating high school, and getting out of the house.

And this is why you jump tandem if you've never done it before. There is a skydiving place 20 miles from Joshua, they must not have wanted to let her jump solo.

way to go dad!! Is he really blaming the instructor? Or was the instructor suppose to go all "Point Blank" and catch the failing chutist?

"Makenzie's father, Joe, said one side of the chute didn’t completely open. Joe claims the instructor didn’t leave the plane to help his daughter, because another jumper decided not to make the jump.

"And then the guy, the instructor, flew with the plane. He never came out of the plane because of the coward that wouldn’t come out ahead of her, that didn’t go."

And that's why I wouldn't jump from a plane unless that bitch was falling apart.

Yeah the Dad sounds like a total Dbag. I'm very happy she's alive. Hopefully this would be a reality check but by the attitude of the father I doubt it.

You wouldn't think an insurer would cover a minor jumping solo.

                              From their web page:
                              The static line course:

The static line method is the traditional way to make a first jump. If you want to make a solo free-fall and then go on to achieve the USPA "A" certificate, you should enroll in a static line course.
                              ...
A static line operated parachute will open within 2 seconds of your leaving the aircraft at 3500 ft. You will spend the next 5 minutes controlling your high performance square parachute down to the landing area. You will be assisted down to the ground with visual and/or radio signals. To make a static line jump you must be no heavier than 300 lbs, in good physical condition, and at least 18 years of age. If you are younger than 18 (but no younger than 16), you can jump with parental consent."

After your first jump you must make at least 3 more static line jumps before you can make your first free-fall. From then on you will be going higher. You will learn to manoeuvre in free-fall and finally you will link up with other jumpers in free-fall from 10,000ft. At that time you will be ready to get the USPA "A" certificate.
                              ...
                              Insurance:

All jumpers on a static line course have the option to be signed up with the United States Parachute Association prior to the first jump. Membership, offers amongst other things, a magazine and liability insurance. Temporary membership (3 months) costs $20 and one year membership costs $65. For more information on the USPA, call 1-800-371-8772 or visit www.uspa.org
                              ...
                              Licensed Skydivers:

Pegasus Skydiving does not train students on sundays, Also we do not do Tandem jumps. We do jump students that are already trained. As such we do have plenty of time to jump licenced skydivers. Licenced jumpers are invited to come on out and make a number of jumps which they might not get if they were at a busier drop zone.
                              ...
                              Release documentation

Jumpers 18 years of age and over will need to complete a 'release' on arrival. Jumpers aged 16 or 17 years of age should download the 'release', complete and obtain parents signature with notary stamp, and bring with you when attending the course.
                              ...
                              Safety:

Skydiving is an adventurous and potentially high risk sport, with care risk can be kept to a minimum. The owner of Pegasus has been operating drop zones since 1976 and has never had or seen a fatality. Like all operations we do see the occasional minor injury due to poor landing techniques. All participants have to complete a 'release' on arrival.

Seems to me, just a bad day. Unless the chute was packed wrong, what else would cause the issue?
