Haha, I think we got ours just before Thanksgiving (born at the beginning of Oct). I totally know where you are coming from.

A crate would have solved most of that. Routine is key. Puppies need LOTS of sleep, UP to 22 hours a day for extremely young pups. If the dog sleeps. They need to go outside as soon as they wake up.

At 12 weeks old, your puppy is learning a lot about the world! Taking good care of them is crucial. Here's what to expect from your 12-week old puppy.

Oh and if he's not already fixed, I'd get him fixed ASAP, otherwise he'll get the urge to start lifting his leg to piss and that's just more of a mess to clean up. Get him fixed at this age and he'll just squat.

Mine was crated the entire time. But when they are that young their capacity to "hold it" is much lower. And there is a big difference between 6-7 weeks and 12 weeks.

          Here, from your link:

Ability to Hold Urine – 12-week-old puppies can generally hold their urine for about 4 hours. This means you will need to take them out at least every 4 hours to get them "housebroken".
Without searching, when I went through all of this, I believe I did every hour the first week, then 2 hours the second, then three the third, then just once overnight until about 4 mo.

Good looking pup. This thread has made me happy we got our last two dogs from the shelter when they were 2 years old and 1 year old, respectively. They were housebroken in a day or two.

We got our pup at 8 weeks old (back in June). Thankfully it was not as when you took on your pup! How soon I forget the "troubles" of the new pup. The laughs more than make up for those moments!

We used crate training when not home, and the bell on the door until I installed dog doors. Thankfully our pup is VERY treat motivated, and training didn't take long at all. Also make a huge deal when they go out and use the bathroom, I'm talking jumping up and down like he just won an award.. it worked well for this pup and risas chocolate lab.

We took our pup out 4 times a day, when training him. Before we actually got a kennel, when he did something bad or used the bathroom inside we punished him by making him sit inside a 315/30/18 spare tire for 20-30 minutes. he was honestly fully trained by I believe 16 weeks. When he obtained parvo(found out the day he shots were scheduled) he stayed overnight and the vet told us he was the only puppy that did not use the restroom inside the kennel while staying overnight(roughly 12 hours). now he is a year old and will bark once or nudge his lease to let us know he needs to go out. He has his bed in the kennel that he sometimes sleeps on and is only locked up when he does something he shouldn't.

Edit: my dog is always a lab mix.

only when you can't watch him leave him in the kennel.
Agreed. Also, the kids will need to be 100% on board with training. Our German Shepherd was fully house-broken by 12 wks but we were ALL involved in her training.

One of the MAIN things was taking her to the same 3'x3' max area in the yard, always on a leash (she had a job we wanted done - no wandering), and near enough to the door so she didn't have to go too far to make pee-pee with a quickness...then a LOT of praise. Good luck!
I no longer shift gears - I switch beers. Cheers!

i have learned that to make.sure to clean pee up so they can't smell it again and go pee in that spot again. Pups can't hold bowl or pee, especially after eating and drinking water.
hey Chili ya have any parks or walking trails you take the dog to.
