He bought this car to give his 16 y/o son who lives with a stepdad and mom. Neighbor tells me his son doesn't want it because its old and ugly. In fact....he told me that the stepdad says he won't let the kid keep it in his driveway IF he brings it home.

There's your indicator. Mom and stepdad don't want the kid to have anything that the dad had to do with.

I'd even be willing to bet the kid might have actually liked the car at some point, but mom and/or stepdad put a bug in his ear that the car was a piece of shit, etc.

I imagine the mom and stepdad are planning on buying the kid something newer and nicer than some "junky old Mustang" to sway the kid that much more away from dad and to their side.

Pretty sad that things work out the way they do after divorces. Of course, I have no idea if any of the above comments are true, just what I took away from the situation.
