  • One thing that tears me apart about this buisiness is the customers that I do like and then get close to.
Couldnt sleep last night so it wasnt until 8 am that I actually crashed out. Was woken up at 1 by a call from my sister. My aunt died this morning. They assume suicide which makes sense considering her husband and all three kids had committed suicide years ago. One thing I really hate about getting older is seeing all your friends and family die. Just a couple years ago I watched my father, aunt and grandfather all die in the same year and now this year I lost a very close and dear friend in June. He was a customer and a good guy so we just became friends. We did thanksgiving together and sometimes he would just hang out at the shop. Was a war veteran that did so much for wounded vets in the Waco area. I called him because he loves hot rods and I had a 34 Ford in the shop so invited him over to check it out. He died not 20 minutes after hanging up the phone with me. I was the last person he ever spoke to. Then last month I lose yet another dear friend that was just a customer but I became close with her and her family. Watched cancer take her arm and watched the decline. Her husband told me the AC stopped working in their Explorer and knowing she needs the AC and that the medical is just killing them I went ahead and overhauled it for free. When they came and picked it up she was in so much pain she winced when I gave her a hug. Husband said that was the first time she smiled in months and wanted to get out of the house just to thank me. I cried for the rest of that day and then 2 days latter her husband called to tell me she passed in her sleep that night. I was just at their home for dinner last night and was cheering the kids up teaching them how to fly drones and gave a small one to each of them. Was feeling pretty good and then this happened.
Also just a couple days ago one of my other customers died in her sleep too. She was a wylie old lady. Real firecracker. Fixed income and needed brakes bad on her car. She was a good customer but didnt have the cash and had no family left. So I did the job and gave her cost on everything and told her just pay half next payday and the other half the next month. Was only a couple hundred dollars. Well I didnt hear from her on the third which is very unlike her so I called. Was her landloard that answered and said she passed away a few days prior.

So much death of people I really like and who do so much for others. It is just really wearing me down.

        • So you work for free on some ones car and then they die? J/k sorry to hear about that, sometimes you can only help them get further down the road but unfortunately the road ends for everyone at some point. It can be hard to tell the difference between those that need help and those trying to take advantage but sounds like your compass is on point

That may be true but they come in a Napa box and do not have the Cardone literature inside. They could very well be Cardone for all I know.
Its like buying Dupont R134 fro Walmart vs Oreillys. My system has a sight glass and when using Walmort R134 I can see the yellow oil in the system even though the can is the same part number as the Oreillys one and not supposed to contain oil When using the Dupont from the parts houses it is not yellow in color when I fill systems.

Lots of companies make the "same" stuff for other companies just with better internals.

But more specificly with cardone I was thinking of their steering racks. Their racks are the absolute worst in the business.

              • Oh speaking of AC stuff. That ass hat with the POS Caddy from last week or the week before came back today. I have a Jag on one lift, a BMW on another and am in a Camry removing its fuel rail. This stalky full tattoo covered Mexican idiot comes in like he still owns the place and says.
"You need to recharge my AC"
"Not a problem sir. I can get to yours at 4PM."
"But it only takes 5 minutes! This is some bullshit."
"Look sir, we had this discussion last time. I cant stop what I am doing to evac your car, weigh the 134 and then charge it again until I have completed the task I am on now."
"Yeah that's what you said last time. You just a money hungry asshole."
"On that not please hop in your POS and get it off my property. I will not be working on your car."
"This aint your property! The Iranian guy owns it!"
"Hes Pakastani and I lease this property. It is mine. When I tell you to leave it that means get the fuck off it."
He goes back to his car mother fucking me and calling me a fat piece of shit and something else I couldn't understand because he was hiding in his car.
I approach the car and invite him to repeat what he said as I did not hear him do to him speaking out the side of his neck. He hops out all hard calling me a fat ass yet again (like I wasn't aware or something) and then stops dead in his tracks as he noticed the very large wrench I was holding. I look down and notice I am still holding it so I throw it on the ground and then place my glasses on the trunk of the Toyota. "Let me explain this to you. I was ready to help you and you became rude and belligerent and then decided to call me names. I will not work on your vehicle and if it pulls on to this property again it will leave on a wrecker." He stepped forward and went to poke me in the chest but I closed the gap instantly and gently let him know when I put him on the ground I will keep him there until the police show up and that the ground is currently 140*. His eyes got big and he backed away and hopped in his car. I felt like a bad ass for all of 5 seconds before I turned around and saw my buddy/co-worker standing there with the shops shot gun. LOL

                Fucking ass hats.

                • After eating lunch across the street at Stripes, it really paints a good picture for all your stories, Bill. There were some rough looking people that came thru Stripes that day.

Actually, they come in a pre-printed Cardone box with a Napa part number and bar code sticker placed over the print. Each shipping station at the factory has several reels consisting of about 30 or so rolls of vendor labels to use. They supply the greater majority of your reman pumps, racks, gear boxes, boosters, cv shafts, calipers, pcms, etc, to the major aftermarket players in North America. Not trying to steer you away from them, though they've had some major steering qc problems the last 18 months which they assure are resolved, but as the guy who hangs the stuff for a living, you deserve to know what you're buying.

So, for a case of Dr. Pepper and $20 in gas, I'll sit at the shop and play on my phone all night and make sure no one messes with stuff. I will make a sign and everything.
