  • I always figured the dealers service department was only there to make you realize how much your car is going to cost for top dollar work to give the customer every excuse to trade it in for a new car and then accept the low ball trade in offer. If that's not what your service writers are doing they are missing out on sales and profit

YUP I made plenty of money walking a customer to the sales floor, and getting a referral. If the customers old car isn't a complete turd, the shop will still get to do the work to get it ready for resale.

      • When people tell me they are an engineer for planes or helicopters I usually get worried about what I will find on their cars. When they add there is a special way to get into the car and start it I get really nervous. LOL
Then I get to see the joy to which I get to spend several hours in.

Yes those are vice grips holding the fan switch in place.

        • I hope you charge extra for that sort of stupidity. Whole thing looks like a fire hazard waiting to happen.

            • Shit like that passes inspection but heaven forbid your tint is 20%. I wish Texas would wake up and eliminate inspection like Florida (and others).

This. If your car gets inspected in Florida, it's because it needs it.

Well his ignition broke so he glued the wood there so the key wont turn all the way back because it locks the column. Since it cant go back the car cant turn off so that's why the main power wire. The other wires with the vice grips are for the cooling fan since he didn't want to replace the fan relay.

ahhh, I figured the ignition part. I couldn't figure out if the switch was tied into the ignition somewhere.

                          • He had a toggle switch on the dash that was anchored by a pair of vice grips. I realized this was for the fan because i was working on the AC and the head pressure skyrocketed. Flipped the switch and the cooling fan turned on. After 20 minutes to charge the AC I grabbed the switch and burned my finger. He has 14 awg wire on a 10 amp switch for a 20 amp fan and there is no fuse in the system. Its a fire hazard waiting to happen.

And yes, instead of opting for the $200 ignition switch fix and the $100 fan relay fix he wanted to spend $600 for me to replace the AC compressor and drier and orifice tube.

Repoed a cavalier from a guy. He used old 10ga wire with cracked up insulation to wire directly off from the battery, went inside the car without using a rubber grommet, to a relay inside the car, and then back out to the cooling fan. No fuse in sight.

He went through all of that shit to bypass the stock relay and created a massive fire hazard in the process. Care to guess what the problem was originally? Will give you a hint, it took me three seconds to swap in the proper part....Yeah, stock relay was bad.
