This was just a random construction site where they were building something. Im sure if the owner had been there they wouldnt have done it.

I have a buddy with a small company that has this problem. He won't spend $500 today to save $$$$ and headaches over the long term. He just suffers with shit breaking and ends up missing out on income because of bullshit that could be fixed right instead of always trying to be cheap. He deals with the same stupid petty issues constantly like their part of the gig. I don't get it.

They think the 30min-1hr that they burn fixing little stuff will cost them, when in reality, they should be making the clients eat that downtime. If you have a piece of equipment rented out, it should be billed for how long it's on site, because that's when it's tied up from a cost perspective.

          • So much truth in this. I have had a dozen customers that came in for CELs and I said it was just O2s the car needed and they ignored it insisting the car drove just fine. I explain why that's a bad idea and just spend the $200 to replace them now or it can and will damage the cats. Those dozen all came back for $1000-$2500 in new cats. I have had many more ignore that warning but don't know whatever happened to the cars.

Also have many that don't want to drop $165 to turn their rotors and slap on new pads and then 3 months latter come in to do it but now the rotors need to be replaced as do the calipers because the phenolic pistons are warped as well due to the metal on metal heat. That usually doubles the bill and sometimes triples it as hub bearings also do not like excessive heat.

Just had a customer put off doing her water pump because she wanted her nails done first. Now her Lincoln needs a new engine.
Good judgment comes from bad decisions and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.

Last time I had an 02 sensor code (2000 5.0 Explorer) I simply swapped the sensors side-to-side to see if the code followed, and the code went away. Lol. Those things aren't cheap!

People still turn rotors? I mean I'd always wanted a brake lathe in my home shop, but I figured all the newer model cars have shit rotors that are designed to be trashed and replaced anyway. Finding someone to turn them was always a hassle so I gave up years ago. Brake work gets a lot of folks, and they wait until the shit is so bad they can't drive it, so even if I had a lathe it would be collecting dust because they're usually toast by the time they want me to take a look. I'll never understand, but brake work is one of the few things I'll still do for anyone and lately a couple hours every weekend helping folks is paying my gas bill.

                      • O o o oriellys turns rotors.

Thinking the rotors on my ol Tacoma may need to be replaced though.

I don't think they train their staff on the lathe. I even volunteer to show them, but no takers. Every time, and I mean at least 20 attempts, they'll say they can't turn them because they're below allowed specs. Even with factory rotors that had never been turned. So I gave up, they're incompetent.

It's like the NAPA in Wylie has a big sign that says "we fix hydraulic lines" and they looked at me like I was crazy when I brought them a section of brake line that I needed flared, and they work on brakes! Bought the tool and did it myself.

                          • I don't even attempt to have rotors turned any more. They're too thin to begin with, and if they're not, they're probably going to cut them too thin anyhow.

                            not worth the time

Exactly. Case in point, I ran across some today that had a new thickness of 1.500", and a discard thickness of 1.430". That isn't very forgiving at all, and those are aftermarket rotors.
