one of my best friends is the same way. I love the guy, but he doesn't put appropriate value on his knowledge and ability.

You obviously help a lot of people, but at the end of the day, you need to take care of yourself or you'll get to a point where you can't help anybody

$65 check-out is ridiculous... $80-90/hr diag or hit the fucking road

you've obviously paid your dues and proven that you're capable of figuring out what's wrong... it's time to make some money at it now. If they don't want to pay, they can take their junk somewhere else

I'm not trying to sound like an asshole here, so please don't take it like that. Not everybody can do what you do, and you should be rewarded for it. Believe in yourself and your abilities and get paid appropriately for them. I wish you nothing but the best
We just charge one flat rate for diag, and if you want us to fix it diag "goes away " and you're just responsible for the repairs.

Same for diagnostics but I only take half the fee off if they have me perform the repairs.
Good judgment comes from bad decisions and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.

        • I just had someone come in asking if we cashed checks. I said no but she was a little insistent we did. LOL

                • I was picking up a few things from Autozone today and the girl in front of me asked the associate where she could find the blinker fluid. Apparently she was pulled over today for failure to signal and after arguing with the cop (she swore she always uses her blinker) he told her that her car must be low on blinker fluid then and should go get it checked out so this doesn't happen to her again. After laughing hysterically the associate informed her that there was no such thing. She then started arguing with him about that. As she's storming off to go to Oreilly's to buy said blinker fluid she yelled "I guess a brain is not a required part of working here"... Needless to say everyone in the building had a huge laugh. The associate actually called Oreilly's to let them know what was headed their way and asked if someone would please record it for him

Yeah we take it off, but in the repair costs the diag time is factored in.

                    • Customer: My truck smells funny!
Me: *sticks head inside.... tries not to vomit* Yes. Yes it does. Something died in there.
Customer: Not that smell! Smells like coolant. Aint drove the truck in 6 years.
                      Me: *pops hood, sees issue*

Me: Rats ate through your vac lines, two plug wires and your heater hoses. Don't tell me you just drove this from your house 30 miles away to here without a drop of coolant.
Customer: What? It never showed hot!
Me: That's because the sensor is touching AIR!
                      Customer: Aw its alright.
Me: Its a GM, it wasn't alright when it left the factory. Well I can fix it but it will be in the morning after it cools down. When I fix the heater hoses though it may just fill the cylinders with coolant though.
Customer: That's okay, I am selling it.

                      Good grief.

                      • One interaction that was not with a customer but parts house. Had to go to AZ today to get some pads for a Jag (only place that had them and I don't have an account there as I hate AZ parts) and went armed with the part number and knowing they had 3 in stock. Parts guy seemed puzzled that I had these facts but needed to make sure I knew what I was doing and was pleased with himself to correct me. I pointed out his number is for ATE calipers where as this Vanden Plas has Akebono calipers. His response was "what is a Akebono and are the brakes better than what the Jag came with?"........ huh... no.... they came with..... seriously? The computer screen he had up showed both styles and one was the part number I gave him. I sent him looking for a metric crescent wrench and then found the manager and told him to sell me THIS part number or I am not telling you what your employee is looking for. And he was really looking hard for one. My most favorite part as I was walking out the door was hearing one other red shirt say to him "I think we out. We only gots the American one."

My autozone is filled with former mechanics that actually know their shit, and the ones that aren't mechanics know me well enough to understand that I know what I'm doing.

As for the parts, I use them pretty much exclusively and I have yet to have an issue.

                          • that's one I would DEFINITELY send packing... by saying: "man, you're looking at about $2900 to get it back on the road"

                              • All auto parts are hit and miss. Heck online is cheaper if you can wait. Got a quote for some specialty sandpaper (3000grit) 6.95 per sheet with my commercial discount.

Amazon bigger sheet 28 shipped for a 12 pack.
