i love it when the police are called. those are usually fun days.

one of my favorites is when an entire front end is put on a car. i mean dash and seats are pulled to put uppers and lowers in. motor out, the car looks like it is on the assembly line it is so bare..

Try using a welder at night. the entire neighborhood sees that arc and instantly start bringing you the dumbest crap to weld or want to use it themselves.
I let one friend use it once. Once. Had a smaller spool in it but it was new. After he left I went to put my machine up since he just left it out and noticed my ground clamp (new) was all slagged up, my (new) tip was just gone and that the entire spool was used! I looked at the panel and he had the power maxed and the wire feed maxed and he was working on a freakin dirt bike! Sure its just a cheap Firepower 165 but on that setting he would need to be welding 1/2" thick plates! LOL

Now nobody touches the machine. Found it brand new still in plastic with a cart and tank at a pawn shop for $200. Will never find that kind of deal again! LOL

            • So grandma calls me on Monday saying her trucks light is on. I tell her close the door (this has worked before due to an open door). "Its not that light" she says. "Its on the thing that says stuff (gauges)." "Is it the light that says '00 OHH?'" I ask.(she once kept hitting the OD OFF button and told me that's what the light said) "No, its the check list." Ah, check engine. Go get it scanned (shes 60 miles away) at Autozone and have them write down the codes so I know what tools to bring. So she does. She calls me back to say "There is something wrong with church and it needs a big black T that's mechanical but not important." I don't know if I have that tool. I asked for the codes and she asks "What codes?" The codes I said to get. Of course she didnt get any codes. So I ask for clarification of what she was told. "I dont know, its a black t shaped thing about this big (like I can see the hand gesture on the phone) and its mechanical and the girl at Autozone said its not important but it needs it to run and that it knows I havent gone to church." Argh. I am utterly lost at this point. I tell her go back and get the codes. She does. She also stops at a local shop that wanted $500+ to fix it. At least she remembers to write the code down. Of course the code is B4H6E.......... I explain that's impossible but realize this is not going to help in any way.
Screw it, I go out with the scanner and random tools and make the drive. The "Big black T" is the TPS (voltage all over the place) and the "Somethings wrong with the church" was the Mass Air Flow Meter that was dirty. Mass. Church. Took a moment.
So $29 latter and the truck runs like new again. I reminded her its almost time for an oil change and she said shes never had one. Now I am worried as it gets done regularly and always has the stickers up to date for them. I think I am gonna have to get a care giver for her.

                  • Sometimes I wish people would tell me why they purposely disconnected something on their vehicle. Like "Hey I unplugged that thing because the wire would smoke after a couple hours. Well gee thanks, would have like to had that info BEFORE your truck set on fire.

Miserable day today. 79 351M truck I replaced the carb on last week decided to set itself on fire this weekend. Turns out the replacement carb had a crack in its housing and couple that with the owner neglecting to tell me the electric choke wire is bad because it stays on all the time was a recipe for disaster. I guess its good I hooked up the choke or the fuel leak may have gone unnoticed for quite some time and caused more of an explosion. Still I don't really care to set my customers cars on fire.
So after dumping a few hundred bucks and about 3 hours I replaced all the vac lines (every single freakin one), new ignition wires, new distributor and a few other odds and ends I was able to bring it back to life. New carb and coil should be here tomorrow. Being the new coil was engulfed in flames I would like to change it even though it tests fine.
And its not that I wanted to start it again with the new burned carb but I was curious how the fire started. That's when I saw the fuel coming out of one of the chokes mounts, circled in red. I then saw the housing was cracked. Bastards.

                    • So continuing on with the above truck yesterday, I get the new carb on and redo everything, start it and watch flames shoot from the carb. I look closely and see the top of the carb is leaking. Ugh, I hate rebuilding carbs and that is why I buy remans. Well in this case that was a bad move. I pop the carb off, remove the top plate and see a freakin gasket for the early design 2150 carb and this one has OBVIOUSLY been updated to the new design.
I call up my parts guys and have them send me a rebuild kit and explain why I am also sending in a $1000 reimbursement sheet. Well I simply put the right gasket on the carb and truck runs like brand new again. Actually fairly impressive with the power.
I look at the carb that caught on fire and the second one and see they were both rebuilt the same day by the same fuck tard. Argh.

                      • So I am not sure to be happy or upset about peoples stupidity. Ford Escape comes in, runs terrible and sounds like ass. Customer had a shade tree mechanic "repair" a blown out spark plug. He did it the hard way (removed head instead of timesert) and upon putting the engine back together mixed #4 & #6 coil wires (I have seen this before) and that melted the front cat, the plugs, the oxygen sensors and filled the third cat with melted front cat chunks. That turned a $100 fix into a $1500 fix. I mean I like the money for the repair and all but damn people, new stuff is too complex to have an average idiot friend "fix" it in their back yard. I like this customer, I think I was more upset at handing him a $1500 bill than he was.

                            • ^^Damn^^People drive shit into the ground, and then get pissed when something breaks, often exclaiming shit like "I just had the oil changed last week!".

If you're depending on Jiffy Lube to tell you how to properly maintain your car, you're going to be walking quite a bit.
