  • Dealership joyride destroys customers ZL1 Camaro.

Whoops. Wonder what options his had that makes him keep turning down replacements.

At 580 hp and a starting price of $55,000, the Chevy Camaro ZL1 ranks as the top dog of the Camaro lineup (at least until the Z/28 hits the track.) For Camaro enthusiasts like John Hooper, author of six books on the history of Camaros, it's a dream car — or at least was a dream car, until an employee at a Chevy dealership totaled his ZL1 on an unauthorized joyride. Nearly a month later, Hooper and the dealership have yet to agree on how much that particular top dog was worth.

Something about Camaros seems to bring out the dark side of the dealer service department; recall the man who hid a voice recorder in the door pocket of his Camaro SS and caught mechanics doing burn-outs. According to Hooper's posts on the Camaro5 forum, he had taken his 2012 Camaro ZL1 to First State Chevy in Georgetown, Del., for warranty work on a paint issue. On Dec. 15, a Sunday, one of the dealer's employees took the keys from the closed dealership and went for a spin — that ended when the ZL1 sheared off a telephone pole.

The next day, the dealership told Hooper about the incident, and by the end of that week, the car had been declared a total loss. Since then, Hooper and First State have been unable to reach an accord over how to replace the ZL1.

To First State's credit, it immediately fired the employee who took the car and tried to pursue charges against him — but local officials said since the car was in the dealership's legal possession at the time of the crash, no crime was committed. Hooper's ZL1 had about 10,000 miles on it, and while First State has offered other used ZL1s as replacements, Hooper has said those cars were not worth as much as his example was pre-crash.

Hooper told the Cape Gazette of Lewes, Del., today that while the dealership has given them a loaner to drive, they are still making payments on the ZL1 while it sits in a salvage yard. “We're losing sleep over this, time off from work, and this still isn't resolved,” Hooper told the paper. “This is so ethically and morally wrong it isn't funny.”

1-2 year resale on those must suck.

Or he is holding out for the z/28 and wants to add some money and get that.

He should get a brand new, totally custom car if you ask me. He had a nice ride. They trashed it and want to replace it with another one like it -- how in the hell is that fair to him? They F'd up big time, and they should have to pay a penalty. He should be compensated for not having his car, for having to deal with the headache, and general because the dealership's douchebaggery. They should offer him a Z/28 if you ask me -- without him having to put any more money towards it.

My only issue is where he was offered other cars that weren't worth as much. If they offered him another car with similar options and miles, and he is holding out for brand new, then that's on him IMO. Too many people think that "they gon git paid" when something like this happens, when all that's owed is a direct replacement.

Damn, it happens all the time unfortunately. Tim's (CWO) Lightning got fucked with at Middlekauf (sp?) Ford in Plano, someone actually saw the grease monkeys burning his tires and fucking up a rim iirc.

Im unsure as to why the dealership's insurance policy isnt being used, at this point. Or even the coverage the guy has on the car. Let the insurance co's figure it out, and quit yer bitchin.

Case in point. It's a friggin' car, not their first-born son, he's owed nothing more than a direct replacement, it' not like he's "suffering" without a car, the only anguish he's having is that he wants a new car and they aren't giving it to him.

That's not going to happen and I'll ask you why do you think he should get a brand new car? His car was not new and most of the time the insurance company will only pay what its worth. Sounds like the dealer is offering a car with compatible mileage and paying his payment til its resolved. At a minimum he should get a new car if they can't find a replacement of equal value. Because they could just let the insurance handle it and will only get paid what its worth.

Can you imagine that phone call to your boss? Man, if I was the driver I'd just walk away.

Unless the employee had to code in the closed dealership or something, bummer man.

                            Dealer is probably self insured.

Oh yeah that's right, I was thinking of Tim for some reason. I worked on that 'L too. He had bad luck with that damn truck, we installed a hood from that fiberglass place in Garland and it didn't fit worth a fuck, lol.
