Man in gorilla suit shot while attempting to rob KFC

RICHMOND, KY (WAVE) - An attempted robbery turned deadly for one central Kentucky man on Saturday. A man disguised in a gorilla costume was trying to rob a KFC restaurant when he was shot to death by a police officer.

Officers were called to a KFC in Richmond on Jan. 22. Employees said the man was dressed like a gorilla and was threatening to kill them. A cashier hiding in the lobby called 911 while the robber pointed his gun at the others.

Employees said the officer asked the man to freeze. In response, he tried to flee. This was when the officer opened fire, fatally wounding the suspect.

"They're like heroes," said Brenda Hale who owned the KFC. "Nobody got hurt in my store and everybody's relieved today it's over with."

Richmond police are not releasing the name of the officer involved. He will be on paid leave while Kentucky State Police investigate the shooting.

Doesn't say whether or not he shot him in the back, but I'm sure that's what most will assume when they read "Employees said the officer asked the man to freeze. In response, he tried to flee. This was when the officer opened fire, fatally wounding the suspect.".

Who cares? Point being, don't rob places and the cops won't shoot you.

Was he trying to steal fried chicken or money?

Yeah shooting someone in the back will be hard to justify man.

If you justify shooting someone in the back for fleeing, what's next? It's ok to shoot someone for not complying? Fuck that. I'm not sticking up for criminals, but I will damn sure fight against trigger happy cops. Their job requires a little restrain, since they carry a gun and can kill. That doesn't mean that's always the solution.

An armed suspect who's fleeing? Didn't listen to the cops orders? Yeah, I'd shoot them too regardless of the angle.

Cop is totally justified. He was protecting innocent bystanders. Luckily, this time it was a man in a costume. If it had been a real gorilla, it may have kidnapped a woman and climbed to the top of the building. Either way, death by firearms.

I see he had a gun, and could have cause harm to anyone he ran into, but it's still very hard to justify shooting some one in the back and killing them. The next guy might reconsider running, knowing he'll be shot and killed, and instead start shooting inside the place, possibly killing others.

Good for the popo. I don't care if he was fleeing or not, you point a gun at someone and threaten to rob/kill them, you deserve whatever happens next.

I would rather the cops shoot in this case, than risk a criminal getting away.

In Texas, it's OK to shoot a fleeing felon. In the back, front, big toe, etc....

It may be hard for you, or any democrat, to justify, but if you committ a violent felony, you take chances.

Or, the next guy might see what this guy got and not try an rob the place at all. Good for the cop, we need more like him.
