I play with a Joss with Predator shaft and an old Meucci. Both great shooters.

Joined wood and spongy glue with cheap cork centers. Over priced pieces of shit.
I don't know much about cues so just curious...

Low deflection shafts do feel different
For value a nice Scruggs, or Gilbert works for me

My predator gets worked weekly and i know some pretty good players locally who agree

A lot of cues are built in a manner of the butt being made out of several different woods versus one solid piece.
The cheaper cues aren't milled to fit very well and use glue to fill in the gaps. Predator does the same process as Rage. Typically using scraps to build a blank, then turning it down.
The higher end Predators aren't built this way.
The Lucasi hybrid shaft is built out of scraps.
As far as shafts go, there's not much point in spending more than $130 for the Player's HXT shaft.
You've got to be a seriously good player to feel or see a difference in deflection between it and any other low deflection shaft.

I should note that a good amount of custom cue makers build 3 piece butts, but these are meticulously milled to fit before gluing.
I've got some choice sticks, but my favorite shooting stick is a cheap ass Lucasi that I bought used and put an HXT shaft on it with a Kamui Super Soft tip.
I've got maybe $200 in it (including all of the tips I've gone through). I've been offered more than it's worth, but I won't part with it.
A buddy of mine makes cues and he's gonna show me how to make my own cue. The shaft will be purpleheart wood and the butt will be turned down from laminated blanks of colored wood. I'm still trying to decide which joint and ferrule I want. Also, whether or not I want a wrap. I'm used to wraps, but I get tired of cleaning them. It would also take away from the aesthetics of the wood.
Here are some examples of what I'm talking about.
I like the looks of that cocobolo ferrule.

Wooden ferrules are crap.
Most all cuemakers use 3 piece construction - buttsleeve, handle with tenons and forearm.
None of these sections are milled, they are turned and glued in a lathe, not a mill. A mill is for cutting points.
I've made two cues myself, it's fun. Here they are:
