It's the time of the year I always hate. But I try to make the most of it with my son. Over the years I've taught him that Xmas isn't about the gifts you get. It's about spending time with the ones you love and being grateful for it. This year won't be any different. I don't think I'll ever celebrate a true Xmas until I have a family of my own.
If you have a son, you have a family of your own. Make the most of it.

They would intentionally be pricks around the holidays, not let me go with my dad before midnight, take me to the airport, etc. So I grew to hate holidays.

Now that I am married with kiddos of my own, I am doing my best to keep the holidays fun, and I've kicked my mom out of my house on christmas day because she was being a bitch.

Keep your head and your spirits up.
Thanks man. I'm just so jaded about this holiday because this family has never had a good one. I try not to let it get the best of me.

Oh don't get me wrong, I do make the most of it with him. It's just I've never been big on making a huge deal out of it.

When I was a kid it was all gifts at midnight then to bed. When I got a little older, after the divorce, it was alternating between Christmas Eve till noon Christmas Day with either my mom or my dad. Nowadays we just get together at Grandparents house and open gifts on Christmas Day whenever we get to them. Sometimes it's like at 3pm or so.

Both with my family growing up in CA, and with Leah's family now, here, I have always done pretty much the same thing. Christmas Eve is the larger family (our siblings, parents, nieces, nephews, etc) and only open gifts to and from the larger group. Then the immediate family (us and our kids) open the rest on Christmas morning. Sometimes we will have an early dinner that day too, but not always.

If changes a bit on odd years because the exes have the kids, so then we just open gifts as soon as they get home.

This year Leah's brother, his wife, and Leah's mom and step-dad are coming over for Christmas Eve. Not sure if we have plans after presents on Christmas Day, maybe spend some time with some friends or something.

Usually open presents a day or two before christmas so we can spend christmas cleaning up and playing with the presents.

Before our meal we have the "Airing of Grievances" where we all tell each other how disappointed we are with each other.

Then after dinner the "feats of strength" where the holiday will end if the head of the household is pinned

I know exactly what you mean. My mother is Satan. My brother is in and out of jail living the glorious life of meth using and my father is dead. I have no family on my side to celebrate with. I am very fortunate to have such good people on my wife's side. As stated, you and your son can have just as good a Christmas as the Griswolds. It's all in how you handle it.

My family always does the go out shopping for last minute things and give out the gifts on the 24th. The 25th is always the big meal and catching up with each other. I dislike this time of year, but I enjoy spending time with my family and giving way more then I get in return...lol
