  • How quickly things can change.

I have a friend that had to have some brain surgery, and is now re-learning how to do things we take for granted, like swallow food. He was at the airport and couldn’t get his hands to work right to use the automated check in, and his headache was getting worse. After a heli ride and a week in ICU, they told him he could go home to wait for the swelling to go down for the surgery. Apparently there was a bundle of blood veins/vessels that is a birth defect many people have, but the vast majority never will know it. His decided to leak, and was bleeding inside his head, causing pressure on the brain, etc. He got to spend Thanksgiving home with his family, and had the surgery earlier this month. He won't be home by Christmas like they originally said.

It hit me the other night, just a few weeks ago we were talking about racing in 2014 (he is a driver on my team) over shots of tequila, and now my buddy is having to learn how to function all over again. This has turned his whole family upside down. These are the kind of people that don’t know any strangers, and any given weekend night may turn into a party at their house. Now he won't accept visitors.

Sorry for the rambling, but it kinda put back into perspective how many of the issues we see and hear about are essentially meaningless in the grand scheme of things, and any of us could be facing a whole different set of challenges at any time without notice.

I had brain surgery a few years ago and it was tough. It scared the hell out of me not being able to speak for a few days. I did loose alot of fine motor skills. Getting my hands to work right, typing, hell even trying to speak without getting frustrated and stop talking was a big challenge for a long time. I still have a few fine motor problems. The worst was not being able to drive for 6 months to a year. I did get a wicked scar out if it though, a nice thick scar going from ear to ear. Good vibes sent to your friend for a good steady recovery.

there was some concern that he wasnt progressing quickly enough after the surgery, was that ever discussed with you?

I was kept in the hospital a week after the surgery at Harris downtown Fort Worth. Mine was a vascular legion the size of a lime that was discovered after I had a seizure in the middle of the night. The brain is a very sensitive thing, so depending on where the brain is being caused trauma at will greatly affect the recovery. What hospital is he in?

Baylor Dallas, IIRC. They moved him to a rehab facility last week.

They told me if there was no bleeding and I didn't sieze while I was there I would be discharged. Is he able to answer easy key questions like his name, what color his eyes are stuff like that? Slurring is expected but the time it takes to respond is the main thing.

I really cant answer those questions. I know that they had him on a feeding tube that they took out last week, and they were working with him all day everyday on physical therapy. Information is a bit hard to come by, since he wont let anyone come see him, his wife is a CEO and has to go to work part of the day, and then go up there afterwards. Her mom passed away this week, so I have given them some distance.
