Wife and I drove a new Cayenne Diesel and Cayenne S recently while we were considering getting a new leftover '13. They were both very nice. The diesel was way quieter than I expected and had nice torque in boost. That said, wife and I both preferred the S with the very melodic 4.8L V8 with 400hp. Decent interior room for 4-5, good hatch space, can tow 7,700lbs, can off-road, can run 5 second 0-60 times, awesome interior, very smooth with the PASM (active suspension), butter smooth 8-speed auto.

In short, trust me, it's not all brand cachet. They are damn nice SUV's.

All of the Cayenne's we've had at the shop seem to be turds. Get a Wrangler, they're an all around great vehicle with a huge aftermarket and the value on them stays solid.

I'll have to look into those.

Quality issues or people not doing regular maintenance? I would love a wrangler but won't fit my needs with 2 dogs and a (soon) kid.

They are pretty much the same thing. I think they even make a V10 turbo diesel.

Someone considering a Cayenne is not someone I would recommend to buy a Wrangler. Clearly they are looking for comfort, space, and dare I say, luxury. A Wrangler has none of those. Granted, a Wrangler is clearly a great and capable off road vehicle, but vastly ill-suited for their wants.

I could see recommending a Grand Cherokee though.

              What about a new Explorer?

I would like a new Explorer with the ecoboost, but I am about to pay my car off and don't want to get into another large loan, I am trying to keep total cost under 20k.

As much as I would like a Cayenne (especially turbo), I don't think it would be a good idea since there is a large possibility that I could be deploying this summer and I would hate to see a repair bill from the Porsche dealership.

                Thanks for all the opinions.

I thought that didn't make it over.

Love mine. Great for weather, but bad on electronics, brakes, and drive shafts. Most repairs have been accomplished with little effort to date. 08 touareg2 60k miles.

My boss at my old job had one of the twin turbo ones.

15K max on a set of tires is pushing it. He also had a problem with the ABS that had to eventually be solved when Porsche flew an engineer over from Germany.

I wouldn't own one because I didn't feel it was all that impressive for the hassle.

Just because its built to look like an SUV doesnt mean its any more offroad capable than a car. Both of the srt8 and Cayenne are designed to be street vehicles. The Cayenne lost most its offroad (and towing) capabilities after the first production year.

So your looking to put a newborn and your wife in a speed machine. That wouldn't be my priorities.

My suggestion since its going to be your wifes car let her choose what she wants, that way she is happy with it. If you want a new playtoy then buy what you want.

It seems like a gently used Tahoe would work pretty well in this situation.

But that wouldn't look as cool parked outside the McMansion.

                            Maybe an Escalade?

I've been pretty happy with my 05 Z71 Suburban, but with the 5.3 it's a little underpowered and a gas hog. I average about 14-15mpg with mixed driving at best.

I just wouldn't have anything remotely sacred on a dirt road. Hell, an older Expedition wouldn't be bad, either.
