  • Another AT&T wireless question.

I've been with Att for 8yrs or so and have unlimited data plan with my iPhone 5. I didn't use an upgrade but bought it from an individual and just noticed that my internet is 4g speeds and not LTE. I always try and not call them in fear of them messing with my grandfather account or trying to extend my contract. Does anyone work for them that could help me out?

    Thanks for any help.

You can upgrade just fine and keep your unlimited data. As for the phone, you need to get the proper simcard for the phone.

Jeff is right, you can keep "unlimited data" but it has a soft cap at 5Gb so when you hit it, they will throttle your speeds down so low that you can't stream anything.

I have read that. I use wifi a lot so it's not too bad. I just figure my phone is capable of getting LTE speeds so I should try and take advantage of that.

Chris is right, the unlimited part has a legalese twang to it, that being unlimited access. You're free to use all the data you're able to @500kb/s after hitting 5gigs.

Just before leaving att, they throttled me 9 days into the billing cycle. Somehow they'd measured 5gigs, despite my usage habits not changing. So I used as much data I could before switching.

Your data speed is highly dependant of the are you're in. At home I get LTE and at work I only get 4g.

FYI A_A_G 4G has been grossly misused in our markets(US). LTE-A is the only 4G, what we were sold as 4G(HSPA/HSPA+) is more like 3.5G.

Over the weekend the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) loosened its definition of 4G to include LTE, WiMax and HSPA+.

Thank you all for the help. I went and got a new SIM card and now I'm getting LTE speeds.
