Speed was a factor in them losing control. Sudden impact, explosion and fire did the rest.
Hell, they could have died going slower.
Just saw an article on AOL that also mentioned that the tires on the car were the originals, and that at 9 years old they had hardened, which diminished the traction.

Investigators also noted the tires were 9 years old. Shortly after Paul died ... law enforcement sources told us they were the original tires on the car and they had hardened ... which means it lost traction on the road.
