  • Unemployment/severance pay question.

My wife was laid off and is now drawing unemployment and has to file every two weeks.

Her severance check came in last week.

Does that have to be reported to TWC the next time she files ?

Could it possibly mean they will quit sending unemployment checks ?

If she has to report it and it might possibly mean they cut off the checks.....how long can we stall on reporting it ?

Anyone been there, done that ?

    TIA

If she knew she was getting a severence check she was supposed to tell them that when she filed for unemployment. However, as long as she tells them soon I bet it won't affect anything.

You must report it by law, then they decide if it affects the benefits.

I'd just call rather than trusting this place.

I went through this 2 months ago and they told me that eligibility is based on last day worked, severance doesn't impact your eligibility date. I was eligible to collect the week after I was laid off, regardless of the severance pay but I did report the severance to them.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

            This

I went through the process twice in the past 3 years working in the banking industry. They didn’t really care about my income as long as I wasn’t earning during the time of unemployment .

Once I became employed, they sent me notification of eligibility change pretty quick so make sure you tell them everything.

Also, try to start a new employment in line with your unemployment pay. I started in the middle of the pay period and had to forfeit the entire pay period (unemployment) as I had become employed. I explained that for the first week of the period I was not employed, they did not care. Had to give it all back and go 4 weeks without pay before my new job's pay kicked in.

            just my .02

I got my severance paid out in three bi-weekly installments after I was booted off he island. It actually falls under a different category as earned income and vexation/holidays. They held my payment an extra 24 hours each time until HR verified it was part of the termination package. Just call in like normal and answer no to earned income and vacation. The next is the option for other money coming in (including a severance) and you'll have to type in the amount. At the end of the call, it will give you another number to call to speak to a live black woman.

You seem to be on a very different system than I am.

Is the woman you talk to Mexican?

As for the severence, back in the day they didn't care what you got paid as long as you didn't get a check for "payment in lieu of notice" which is a fancy way of saying they paid you in advance to stay on the payroll for a few more pay periods. IE, "We'll pay you through next May even though your ass is gone now"

That's exactly why they had to have correspondence with my HR. They wanted to basically hear that my employment terminated on xxx date. The severance was a condition of that separation agreement that occurred on that date. It could be paid out whenever. I ended employment, payroll, benefits, etc.

If it was something like cashing in vacation, then it would have been a payment of something I accrued/ earned during my employment and they are still paying me for it.

Our company uses a automated system to provide employment dates, base salary (could be a problem for me) and how terminated/laid off. Trying to get a person on the phone for HR when you have 20,000 employees on this project is next to impossible.

My base is nowhere near what my gross income is. How will that weigh in on my total eligibility?
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.
