Aside from my back issues, I'm loving it. Built a huge ass fire last night. It had obviously just finished burning all the way down when I woke up, so I stoked it back up again. Going to nom on some beef stew and watch some movies today. Perfect.

Previous owners left me a ton of oak, but it isn't split, so I just pile it up and it takes longer. Throw in a couple of piece of grocery store split wood to get it going and a starter log and it all works out good.

Our fire place is nearly 100% for visual purposes. The vast majority of the heat goes straight up the chimney. The house temp also drops like a rock if you pull back on the t-stat.

Quick question, when we had our house built we declined the fire place option. The location that it was going to be really sucked. I really want one though and was wondering what all is involved in putting one in. I have an area in my living room where a good looking or ornate free standing unit could go and there is a clear path up and out of the roof. Is this kind of thing even a possibility? I would not try to do it myself but am interested into looking into it.

With enough funds, you can do anything to a house. I couldn't own a home without a fireplace. It's one of my favorite features. While we're on the subject though, I do have a gas line that goes into mine. Those of you with gas fireplaces, do you prefer it to non-gas? Obviously not having to clean up all the time is probably nice, but I enjoy the crackle of the wood and all that. I've never used a gas fireplace, so I'm not very familiar with them. Looks like they're a little pricey to get set up, but after that it shouldn't cost much to operate.

I'll build a fire pit or fireplace out on the back deck soon. Then I'll be back to hauling wood.

It's nice to just flip a switch and you have a fire going
