Obviously not having to clean up all the time is probably nice, but I enjoy the crackle of the wood and all that. I've never used a gas fireplace, so I'm not very familiar with them. Looks like they're a little pricey to get set up, but after that it shouldn't cost much to operate.
I spend a decent amount of time in PA every winter the wood burning fire (that heats the entire downstairs) is very nice. There's a lot of work involved though ... I'll take a gas fireplace for a daily.Originally posted by davbrucasI want to like Slow99 since people I know say he's a good guy, but just about everything he posts is condescending and passive aggressive.
Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?
You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

I'll build a fire pit or fireplace out on the back deck soon. Then I'll be back to hauling wood.
I've put several of the gas standalone units in, it's not bad at all.
Fire pit out back has the piping ran to the grill area with all the valves and such to put a gas setup in there. One day we might do it. But right now I enjoy burning whatever in the firepit.Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

I can't decide which I want most out back, a pit or fireplace. You'll have to swing by when you get back.sigpic18 F150 Supercrew - daily

Cold but not too windy. Said 34 on my mirror temp on the way in. Should get ugly when it gets dark and the temp falls this pm. Just wet and miserable right now. Firewood stacked under the porch outside the backdoor hope it is dry enough tonight.Rich

Every wood-burning fireplace I've been around cranks out a ton of heat. Love them. The in-laws have a gas fireplace. It's easy, clean, way cheaper than wood, but it just doesn't put out heat like a wood one.
My grandparents have a couple of wood stoves in their house, and those things rock. You put a few logs in, close the door, and it keeps the house warm for hours.

I actually kept my living room around 68-69 degrees all weekend from just using the fire. Thermo is right in the hallway directly off the living room, and the heater never kicked on, and had it at 67 just in case it dropped. Rest of the house was a tad chilly, but I just hang out in there anyway, so it was pretty good.

im prolly in the minority, but i hate the smell of smoke and such from a fire. if mine wasnt gas and as easy as flipping a switch i would never have a fire. i do agree that wood is much hotter than my gas.
