DR's, P.A.'s, RN's help inside please (pacemaker info)

I would love for some advice..


my dad ended up in the hospital today(went in for allergies and they sent him to the hospital).. He is currently in the ICU... Dr. put a temp pacemaker in tonight. He gets a full one tomorrow. He told me they pulled all kinds of blood (maybe results tomorrow?). his bpm was 34 out of nowhere... he's always been healthy other than the Dr. telling him he needs to be more careful with his cholesterol (but never really bad). Is this common for someone that age (65) Sorry for rambling guys but this is the first time ive ever felt this kind of scared.. I know its part of life but neither him or I are ready.. hes the one person I can tell EVERYTHING! went from father to best friend and its been awesome!

It's probably sick sinus syndrome (sinus node dysfunction) which a pacemaker will alleviate the symptoms. Basically, his coil pack went bad and now he has an artificial coil pack. Assuming he did not have an MI that caused this or subsequent to this, then he will be fine...barring surgical complications of course.

he actually went to the dr for allergies yesterday because he thought he had a cold

They will do an echocardiogram to make sure he doesnt have cardiomyopathy/CHF as a lot of these patients end up needing a pacemaker/AICD at some point. But from your initial post, it sounded like he had symptomatic bradycardia which is usually from SSS/SND in that age group. Let us know what they find.

What Dr Dave said...Im just going to say that the good thing about this is, is that this is a simple procedure and so routine. I wouldnt be worried at this point. Wait for the echo and see what his heart is doing.
